Watch Dogs had a spectacular demo at the Destination PlayStation event last week, and the game will be released on six platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC, PS4, Xbox 720. Meanwhile, GTA V has only been confirmed for the PS3 and Xbox 360. GTA V could come to other platforms, but as of now, it’s only been confirmed for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Since Watch Dogs will be released on six platforms, is there any possible way the game could sell as much or more than GTA V?

Grand Theft Auto V is the king of the open world video games. The series has been around since the 90’s, and has sold over 125 million units Lifetime-to-date. GTA players love the freedom, story, and gameplay the GTA franchise offers. The games are meticulously made. The main entries of the franchise are handled with such care, and are never ‘rehashed’ to the point of redundancy like Call of Duty or Madden. The voice acting is always top-notch and the characters are varied and intriguing.
Watch Dogs, Ubisoft made, new IP, set in Chicago, and oozes style. Its innovate, and looks to bring a different spin on the open world action game. Ubisoft has a good track record with open world games. The Assassin’s Creed Series doesn’t sell as much as GTA, but it’s no slouch at retail. Ubisoft has applied what they learned from Assassin’s Creed to Watch Dogs. The hacking gameplay aspect has never been taken to the level Ubisoft is going with Watch Dogs. If done correctly, Watch Dogs could be one of the best open world games ever made, and gives next generation its first killer “multiplatform” IP.
If Ubisoft takes advantage of the Wii U and PS Vita/PS4/PS3 play to broaden the games appeal. Watch Dogs could take off in ways GTA V can’t. Wii U owners want unique uses to the Wii U Gamepad, what better game to do that than an open world hacking simulator. The variety of uses of the Gamepad could be really innovative. The PS Vita in combination with the PS3 or PS4 could also bring in new gameplay elements.
It’s possible that Watch Dogs could sell as much as GTA V. Its a new IP, but its on six platforms. If GTA V ends up coming on other platforms, then all of this changes. But as of now, Ubisoft has a great game that could move a lot of units if developed, marketed, and promoted right.
What do you guys think? Can Watch Dogs sell up to the standard of GTA? Or is GTA V going to blow Watch Dogs out of the water? Put your comments below.
