Don’t Trust your gut Feelings: Shadow of the Eternals is Confirmed for PC and Wii U

Shadow of the Eternals is basically Eternal Darkness 2, new details have surfaced about this brand new horror game. Get all of them past the link.

The game is being crowd funded, and not through Kickstarter. Dennis Dyack is looking to raise 1.1 million dollars for the development of the game. And probably the biggest news is that the game is coming to the PC and Wii U. Earlier, I said I had a gut feeling it wasn’t coming to the Wii U. That’s why from now on, I will no longer be trusting my gut feelings. I’ll just wait for a official announcement.

Here are some details on the story and plot via mynintendonews:

When Detective Paul Becker is called to one of the bloodiest gang massacres in Louisiana state history, only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections will uncover the truth about the ‘Ancients’. Shadow of the Ancients is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Reqiuem.

Featuring an ensemble cast of heroes and villains, the game will span over 2500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary, and the United States. Players will question the perception of reality as they try to balance the mechanics of combat, magick, and sanity events to progress through the adventure. Shadow of the Ancients will take players on a memorable journey throughout time; weaving historical fact with disturbing fiction to create an experience unlike any other.

Here are some additional details from GoNintendo:

- coming to Wii U (and PC) in Q3 2014
- this is as long as crowdfunding comes thorugh
- Precursor Games is a company formed after the death of Silicon Knights
- game will be episodic
- current goal is to make a season of 12 playable episodes
- each will focus on at least one playable character
- roughly two-to-four hours of gameplay in each episode
- will bring back the combat, magick, and sanity event mechanics from Eternal Darkness
- funding goal is $1.1 million
- Kickstarter will not be used
- donate to become a member of the “Order of the Unseen”
- get access to the development forums and interact with the team
- other rewards include copies of episodes of the game, posters, Skype calls with a developer, and creating your own sanity effect
- story follows detective Paul Becker as he investigates a brutal massacre in Louisiana that left two cults decimated
- Becker ends up learning of the Eternals
- follows a similar path as Eternal Darknes
- jump between different characters across 2,500 years of history
- regions ranging from the United States and England to Egypt and Hungary

So it looks like this game is a go on Wii U and PC. Those just happen to be my two favorite platforms, along with the 3DS. Are any of you guys going to be donating to get this game made? I know I will.

A lot of these details are cool except for one key detail: game will be episodic. I personally don't like episodic games unless is makes sense with the context of the game. For Eternal Darkness, I never thought of the game to be episodic. However, I would still love it to be funded and I hope it does reach its goal.

To me, it makes sense for Eternal Darkness. Each level was a different character, telling a different story, in a different era with different abilities.

I'm not a fan of episodic games overall but mostly because I would rather just get the whole game at once rather than having to buy each episode. Considering I will likely be funding this, and in doing so will secure my ownership of all of the episodes….I'm okay with it.

      • Titan64 says:

I see your point. I won't get all "OH FUCK EPISODIC GAMES" because Walking Dead proved to me that it can work. What I do not want to see is to have one character for that entire episode because it would be a waste for me. However, since we cant predict the future, I will support this game no matter what.

  3. bigchad says:

the game actually taking over the remote on the gamepad to actually change channels, volume, ect. if thats possible.

  4. bigchad says:

yeah ive had a few gamepad ideas of my own brewing in my head for a while now. the screen popping up for home button without touching it friends list or miiverse blinking you touch it and even more crazy stuff happens, the gamepad out of range, low battery indicator. if nintendos in then they can use the official screens.

    • RicardJulianti says:

I could see it popping up this "Look at the Gampad" icon……and when you do, it is blank/tells you to look at the screen/doesn't show anything different….and then when you look back at the screen, it is all messed up, making you think it is all bugged out.

They could even use the built in camera to do eye tracking (I think) so that it knows exactly when you look away, so it could pop something up on the screen, simply as a jump scare. It could also use the camera to take a picture of you, and distort the image greatly enough that it is disturbing, but you'll still be able to tell it's you which would make it even MORE disturbing, then they put it on the screen…..like if the character looks in the mirror or something.

I seem to remember the original REALLY messing with my head at times, so as long as this does, I'm good.

  5. RicardJulianti says:

See? This is why I say don't count anything out until it is officially announced, haha. It would be awesome if Nintendo stepped in a la Bayonetta 2 if this didn't get the funding it needed. I feel a Miiverse campaign coming on…..

I'm definitely funding this, dunno how much, but yeah. I LOVED Eternal Darkness and if this is as close as we are going to get to having another one, bring it on. I can easily come up with a few insanity effects (which apparently Nintendo has a copyright on???) using the Gamepad that would really start to mess with people.

  6. bigchad says:

im really excited for this, but its hard not to be skeptcial. i just hope nintendo is in on it.

  7. Gryphonofmight says:

I will say that Nintendo should have retro studios make a new eternal darkness game. Or maybe Platinum games.

    • Furious Francis says:

Maybe, but I really want a Metroid game on the Wii U. Platinum Games specializes in high paced action games, not horror games, so there not the best choice. Retro would be better than Platinum.

      • Gryphonofmight says:

Then Nintendo probably will take over this and have their devs help out.

      • Rpx86 says:

No offence, I cannot see Retro Studios best suited as doing a horror game. I think Nintendo would need an third-party developer that has previous experience in horror to make an official “Eternal Darkness 2.”

Also, what going on with Final Frame, I recalled that Nintendo has co-IP rights to that franchise. So maybe the team that make those games, might be a better choice but than how that developers deal with a Western Concept Horror Game is another issue.

      • timg57867 says:

Say Francis, sorry if this is unrelated, but I want your opinion:

Is GoNintendo a good community to join? You seem to pop up there often so that's a good sign. :)

        • RicardJulianti says:

I joined the community there…..but I can never comment on the articles, which is the only thing I want to comment on. It literally tells me "You cannot comment on this [blog post? article? whatever]"

The message boards are a bit…..boring in my opinion. When I first signed up, there weren't really any topics that interested me so I pretty much just go there for the news.

          • koopzilla says:

That's strange, I never had any problem with not being able to comment on posts. I have been going there for years though. They must have set up some kind of time limit or something for posting on articles.

I like it, it's pretty much any news that's even remotely Nintendo related. RMC, the guy that runs the site seems like a genuinely great guy. Most of the people there are friendly, but there's a few sometimes that seem to troll. Most of them seem to disappear eventually, presumably banned. One thing I don't like is you can't even discuss Metroid: Other M, the thread will be locked immediately. I loved that game, and I don't really see the harm in discussing it. Some people have a complete and total hatred of it though and freak out and want to argue about the mere mention of it. Almost everyone on my Friends List on my Wii U and 3DS are from that site, and they are cool people. If anyone wants to add me let me know btw.

I love Player Essence too! I just discovered this site a while back, but it's quickly become one of my favorite sites. Actually GoNintendo and Player Essence are my two favorite sites on the whole internet. Lot's of nice people here too. Most other sites I've went to are full of trolls and very disrespectful people.

          • Titan64 says:

Oh Other M, still causing hate, even though most of it is undeserved but hey thats my opinion. I discovered playeressence by a youtuber and its now my most visited site. There is one other good site by Nintendo Enthusiast but the community is non-existant but the articles are fantastic. Unlike the troll bait……..no…they don't get a mention from me. All I will say is it Rhymes with Prentendo Tripe

          • RicardJulianti says:

It's possible that it could be because I have never commented on anything in the message boards…..but I really only signed up when there was this news article I wanted to comment on….whatever. Not a big deal.

I don't even know where I found Player Essence, but it was the "Microsoft and Sony are closer to going 3rd party" article that brought me here. It is definitely one of my favorite site snow, mostly because the community is awesome. There really aren't that many disagreements, but they when they do happen, it is in a respectful manner.

There is a small part of me that wishes Adarazz was still around so he could respond to me and explain himself for once……I gave him multiple opportunities to have a civil discussion, but he was never going to and just wanted to cause trouble so banning him was definitely a good call and Francis' part. Same goes for Wooferz….dunno if he was banned or not, but….I tried.

            Oh well.

          • koopzilla says:

I think the only thing Adarazz was interested in was the differences between their, there, and they're. That's all I ever seen him post about.

I discovered the site from youtube after watching his video about Pachter being full of shit.

          • Furious Francis says:

I banned his ass, so he won't be coming back. LOL

        • Furious Francis says:

It’s ok, I comment there every now and then…….not as cool as playeressence! But I’m bias

  8. Gryphonofmight says:

If Nintendo doesn't take over, then they might have to sue since their patents would be violated or to ensure there is no PC port. Either way I doubt it will end up as the devs see it happening now.

  9. Gryphonofmight says:

Nintendo owns the patents on the game mechanics so this would have to be very different or Nintendo would have to take over.

  10. sergio111293 says:

I'll definetly be giving them some support, but that's a pretty high goal, $1.1 million. I really hope they reach it.

  11. Furious Francis says:

That's enough man, I'm just going to ban you.

  12. RicardJulianti says:

See…..there's no need to be an ass about it. Instead of providing a one line response that comes off as you being a dick, especially considering your history here, you could have contributed to the conversation. He didn't include the comment about Nintendo helping out in the article, so really there is no need to provide evidence, it is his personal belief that Nintendo will help out.

You could have come in with, "Are you sure Nintendo will step in? It's possible that Dyack approached them with the concept before deciding to crowd-fund it. Since they already own the copyright for Eternal Darkness and might entertain the possibility of making it in the future, they simply weren't interested." or something to that extent. But you didn't.

It is interesting to me that whenever I provide a well thought out counter argument to whatever point you are trying to make, you completely ignore it. Instead you hunt out comments from the creator of the site and make asinine comments just to cause problems.

I'd like to see you start a website. In the short time I have been visiting (and writing), the community and number of views on articles has grown exponentially. There is nothing wrong with having a different opinion, but when you come in and act like an asshole when everyone else is respectful, it defeats the point.

  13. Furious Francis says:

Then GTFO my website, nobody wants your ass here. Please leave, and don't come back.
