Grand Theft Auto is a unbeatable franchise when it comes to open world, sandbox style games. Rockstar and Take Two have now announced the franchise has shipped over 125 million units lifetime. Keep reading to here direct quotes from the guys who bring you the game.
In an interview with Gamespot, CEO Strauss Zelnick stated the franchise has shipped over 125 million units worldwide. Grand Theft Auto 4 was another huge seller racking in 25 million units and Grand Theft Auto 5 is sure to add to the total massively.
Part of Grand Theft Auto’s huge success, according to Zelnick is because the franchise is not annualised.
“It’s our view that if you want intellectual properties to be permanent, then you run the risk in that circumstance of having consumers fall out of love with that franchise,”
Zelnick also notes that games like Call of Duty are awesome but there will be a drop or risk when you release it every year. The is apparent with Call of Duty Black Ops not selling better than Modern Warfare 3 at the moment.
“That’s never been the case with one of ours. Ours do better each time. Our view is it’s hard to make permanent intellectual properties if you annualize it, with the exception of sports titles. So far that’s proven to be the case. IP that is annualized eventually seems to hit the wall and we don’t want our IP to hit the wall,”
Grand Theft Auto 5 is hitting the PS3 and 360 in the Spring of 2013.
