PS3 PS4 Wii U 9

Mark Rein says the PS4 is like “the Worlds best PC”

After laughing off the Wii U at GDC last week, Mark Rein has now praised Sony’s PS4 saying it’s like a “really perfect gaming PC”. Oh boy…… this guy just loves being click bait.

At a interview at GDC here is what Mark Rein said about the PS4:

“I think it’s a very smart move on Sony’s behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it,” he said. “Let’s not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 – that’s not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that, we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that.

“The other exciting thing is that when you think about Windows, even Windows for most people is tied to about 2GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows. It’s like giving you the world’s best PC.”

Rein said many of the features Sony has announced for the console, like background downloads, are “super convenient”.

“The kind of stuff that they announced that they’re doing, the level of convenience and things like that – they’re making a really perfect gaming PC,” he said.

“I’ve always said that the things in the next-generation that aren’t just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience – the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad.”

I dislike Mark Rein, not because of his comments on PS4, but because he feeds flamewars online. Oh well, angry PC gamers commencing attack in 3….2….1…

Oh damn…the PS4 is gonna beat my Core i7 3770k, 16 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM, RADEON HD 7950 PC?
Actually, I'd like to see the price tag on it if it did. But surely, even Sony aren't that stupid…surely?

Yeah, Sony slipped Mark Rein some money.

I just had a long "discussion" on the IGN boards (I know….I know) about the PS4's GPU. He was claiming that it is hands down more advanced than dedicated gaming PC's and will be for 2 years. The 7970 overpowers the GPU in the PS4 single-handedly and the soon to be released 7990 will stomp both of those. Sure it has more RAM than a single one of those cards….but only 2Gb more, and a truly dedicated gaming PC tends to use a Crossfire/SLI setup anyway. Rein is DEFINITELY on Sony's payroll if he believes it is "like being handed the world's best PC" even though it clearly is not. He is starting to praise the PS4 almost as much as Jonathan Blow.

I am starting to get the feeling Sony and MS are actually terrified of Nintendo. The way they go about things tells me that they are afraid Nintendo will outlast them unless they provide better graphics and similar (yet lesser) ways to play games. But in doing so and not focusing on the gameplay experiences (for the most part), they are almost ensuring Nintendo will survive.

I don't know of a single Playstation or Xbox game I can play over, and over, and over without it getting old quickly, yet I can do that with almost my entire catalog of Nintendo games. ESPECIALLY Star Fox 64….I'll play it for a few hours and beat it 3 or so different ways….and do it again the next day or maybe even later the same day. That kind of experience is what keeps Nintendo in the business, that and always using a mix of nostalgia and new gamer targeting. New gamers are being born every day after all.

And speaking of moneyhats, Amazon is doing something a little fishy at the moment. If you view the 3DS/XL, it advertises the Vita and actually says "Also consider the Playstation Vita." With the Wii U it has "Just announced: Sony Playstation 4"

While this normally wouldn't be an issue considering sites do similar things all the time, "recommended for you" or "users who viewed this also viewed…"….but when you view the Vita/PS3/PS4, there isn't a single word said about any other console. It tells you to check out the Vita store or PS3/PS4 games. Something isn't right there….

“I’ve always said that the things in the next-generation that aren’t just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience – the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad.”

This has got to be a joke. First of all Sony is all about brute force. Every console is about being the most powerful at the time of it's release with little else changed. Look at their controller, it hasn't changed since the PS1. PS4 is slightly changing it, which looks to be way better (except I can't fathom why they continue putting the d-pad in the primary position on an almost exclusively 3D gaming system). But, the guy laughs at and writes off the Wii U for not being as powerful. I will agree, I think it takes more than simply better graphics to move the industry forward, I just don't think that's what this guy really thinks, otherwise he would love Nintendo. According to this statement he should be a huge Nintendo fan, look how simple they made the Wii to use, and the great services the Wii U has, but again he completely ignores that. Also I personally wouldn't consider iPad games the pinnacle of fun, theres a little fun to be had but a few games out of thousands is not a good track record. Even the games I've played that seem to be okay are completely ruined by the lack of buttons. And the whole idea of PS4 being the worlds best PC is truly a laughable statement, even though I personally would prefer a PS4 to a PC, (I'm just not into playing games on my PC, well unless it's Sim City, but don't get me started on what EA has done to that) I wouldn't ever make that stupid of a statement.

I'm convinced Sony has some sort of deal with him or Epic for money.

  • koopzilla

But he didn't mention Microsoft or Nintendo, this must be his idea of a funny joke.

    • Furious Francis

He didn't mention MS because they haven't unveiled their console yet, and we already know what he thinks about Wii U.

  • Dusk

Wow! This dude… I really don't know what to say! I think he might be actively trying to alienate every gamer other then Sony. What are they paying this dude?

    • Furious Francis

It has to do with Unreal Engine 4, no doubt Sony is slipping Epic money, or their is some type of deal that nets money from Sony to Epic. Why else would he laugh off the Wii U in a unprofessional manor, then praise the PS4 with no BS or jokes.
