Nintendo Q3: Wii U Games Coming out in the Summer, 3DS Leading in Japan

Nintendo released their slashed Wii U and 3DS sales projections earlier today. Now Nintendo has presented the companies come back strategy for lower than expected sales of the Wii U and 3DS. Nintendo is planning on bringing more Wii U games, and pushing more content on the 3DS. Plus a secret game by Shigeru Miyamoto.

Iwata took the stage by saying he feels its his fault for slashed sales forecast of the Wii U. The 3DS is doing well in Japan. Headlined by Animal Crossing New Leaf. Female users are jumping on the 3DS bandwagon according to Nintendo. The 3DS has a 25% female consumer base. However, Animal Crossing New Leaf has bumped it up to 50%.

The 3DS is not doing as well in the US with a -27% drop in comparison to the Japanese sales. Europe looks good as the 3DS has grown in each market but the UK, but is still tracking faster than the DS.

Iwata stated the Wii U has failed to deliver enough value for consumers to rush out and pick it up. Nintendo has no plans to cut cost because they are already selling it below value. Nintendo is planning on working with 3rd parties more to increase sales.

Iwata also stated that its easier for 3rd parties to develop on the platform, and Nintendo plans to improve on it. Iwata also said the Wii U’s processor is memory optimized, so the CPU and GPU stats are less important. However, Sony and Microsoft will be using similar optimization in their high powered systems.

The Wii U has around 74% of its systems connected online. More Wii U software can be expected by the middle of the year and on. Expect Shigeru Miyamoto to ‘change his gaming style’ for Wii U. Miyamoto also said other developers have not yet built much uniqueness into Wii U titles.

Iwata has claimed the Wii U has become ‘part of his life’ and its the first time a console has drawn him in so much. He said cloud gaming will not replace physical hardware like the Wii U, but stated that smartphone gaming is now rivaling traditional console gaming. Nintendo plans to up their game, bringing out bigger better titles in response.

Nintendo plans on making more asymmetrical gameplay type of games. Pikmin 3 will feature this, but not evedry game. Iwata claimed Nintendo needs to market and communicate this feature better. Iwata also fells packaged games will not be replaced by digital, and digital is a key factor in growing your sales. Nintendo platforms hosted 11 billion sales in nine months as well.

NFC is something Nintendo plans to incorporate, but will not have any to show till the end of the year. Nintendo will also be shooting higher in there target forecast for the 3DS due to heavy hitters like Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest 7, Animal Crossing and Pokemon X/Y.

“It is my mission to improve and make our platforms solid,” Iwata concluded, saying the Wii U will be driven by increased software sales after northern summer.
