Nintendo: Wii U can “probably fend off PS4, Xbox 720″

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime believes the Wii U is powerful enough to fend off the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720.

There has been much debate weather the Wii U will be able to compete graphically with the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony. With Nintendo’s focus on core franchises Reggie fells they will not be at a disadvantage like they were with Wii vs PS3/360.

Speaking to Seattle Times, Reggie touched up on a lot of aspects about the upcoming Wii U, and competition from the rival console makers came up. Asked whether the Wii U can fend off the PS4 and Xbox 720, Reggie said, “Once you talk about what that is, we can probably fend it off”.

Reggie also commented on the longevity of the Wii U, which he believes is based on graphics and a robust online system. He said:

“It’s based on having great graphics, it’s based on having a robust online execution. We believe that this system is going to have a very long life, and it’s going to be very well supported by third-party publishers.”

Nintendo has proved they can fend off the stronger PSVita in the handheld space but the consoles are a whole different beast. However, I do believe Nintendo will do so. I was sold on that Wii U Zelda Tech Demo. They system can obviously pull off some great graphics. The controller is unique and fun, plus Nintendo will have all the great franchises we know and love. The PS4 and Xbox 720 will be strong but I doubt it will the gap the Wii was comparied to the PS3 and 360.

What do you guys think? Is the Wii U going to be vastly underpowered when the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out? Or will the Wii U hold its own? Put them in the comments below.
