Pretty much agree with everything Francis had to say regarding Nintendo’s summer droughts. These type of droughts wouldn’t exist if A) their platforms had meaningful 3rd party support and B) their games were “shared” across their handheld and consoles.

  • 7thlevel JR

lol the same people that are calling 3rd party’s useless or crap are the same people that are bitching and crying for 3rd party games like kingdom hearts 3 and FFXV to come to nintendo consoles

    • Travis Touchdown

Those games are going to be terrible regardless, but there’s no reason they shouldn’t come to the system.

      • Jon Turner

And you know this, how? Are you a fortune teller or something?

Why don’t we wait and see how these games turn out instead of passing judgment. We’re jumping the gun here.

        • Travis Touchdown

Funny. Getting a PS3 is exactly what made me turn against fans of that system. Nothing on there is any good.

          • TheAdj

Depends what you like playing. I got a few hundred hours of enjoyment from games on that system.

          • Jon Turner

That’s what I used to believe until I actually started playing. I found games on there that I quite enjoyed unreservedly. Resident Evil 5, although a step down from RE4, was still fun to play. And so far I found Ni No Kuni and The Last Of Us to be surprisingly good. Batman Arkham Asylum is also quite enjoyable; I loved Arkham City on WiiU, so playing the prequel was interesting. The KH remixes and even the FFX HD remaster was also nice to have, as I had never played either of them before on any Sony system. Ever. Plus, the option to download classics from PS1-PS2 like WiiU is a very nice feature. FF VII-IX, Xenogears, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Lament of Innocence, the Fatal Frame games… there are games on the PS3 that are absolutely worth playing. The older classics included.

Now by saying this I am not abandoning my fandom for Nintendo. I will always prefer them. But there are games on Sony systems that I wish could come to Nintendo systems that intrigue my interest. I’m not going to cut off my nose to spite my face just to play those games whether they hit Nintendo systems or not.

I always have ,and always will be a Nintendo fan. I just have another system to play as a backup as well.

          • Travis Touchdown

“I like old games, so that makes this content worthwhile!”

The only reason I don’t regret my PS3 entirely is due to the large library of classic games on PSN that I adore. However, that does not change the fact that nothing that is actually new is worth bothering with.

          • CapableTie

You shouldn’t need to say your not abandoning your Nintendo fandom, not being a total fanboy who refuses to expand their gaming horizon (by choice), doesn’t at all take away from your fandom. Like I’m not much of an Xbox fan, but I think the Xbox One and Titanfall and Sunset Overdrive are great! I may prefer Nintendo but I won’t deny myself great experiences.

          • Jon Turner

Part of this is because I fear that my comments may be interpreted by some people as if I’m talking smack about Nintendo, particularly certain people who don’t want to hear ANY kind of criticisms toward Nintendo. It’s also a way to try to prevent myself from being put down by anyone who may take offense at what I say when I mean no harm.

          • CapableTie

I used to sugarcoat my criticisms like that too, but people still came at me super aggressive over even the SLIGHTEST of criticisms I had for Nintendo.
Not catering MY comments for those people anymore.

          • FalconLawnch

Don’t worry Jon, I think that the overly confrontational guys like Titangamecube and Gaugheyad have left PE because it’s “clickbait”, or something.

What I find funny are all the ways in which many, many “gamers” seem to regress as they age. They get taller, their limbs grow out, beards pop up on their chins and necks… And yet, too often, the sum total of what you’re left with is something that has managed to…not mature as a human being, but de-mature.

Can anyone here raise their hand and say they remember a time when they were kids, playing their SNES, N64, PSX, what have you, and complaining about “gaming droughts”? I don’t mean just being bored or wishing you had something new to play, but actually getting MAD at a given company and criticizing them for a perceived “drought”. I’d never, ever seen this before the Wii U; you may be able to anecdotally cite times where you and your friends complained about a lack of games from so-and-so, or even read a post/comment somewhere that invoked the term “drought”. But it did not, at all, exist or virally circulate as a concept the way it does today. Even in spite of facts like the Wii U already having a larger library than the N64.

It seems to me that as both gamers and the gaming media come of age, they find it difficult to reconcile their interest in and history with video games, with how they live and communicate as adults. Regarding the latter (media), all the gender politicking and SJWBS we’ve seen crop up in recent years has been happening for the same reason that SOME of us have, in our inanity, been bitching about “droughts”; they are confused, trying — and failing — to become more “deep”. Out of either dissatisfaction or an inability to indeed talk the straight-up, meat-and-potatoes of gaming, they desperately grasp for something to convince both themselves and others that they are the coolest, savviest, most sophisticated GAMERSUPERNERDOTAKUGEEKCHICTRANSWOMANFEMINISTRETROFAN out there.

And that’s the thing — it’s considered savvy to complain about “gaming droughts”. On the rare occasion when the word “drought” ISN’T being trotted out as a
ridiculous, one-sided assassination of the Wii U — a system that
actually manages to be competitive in terms of the raw number of big
deal games despite the fact it’s practically one publisher versus the
entirety of everyone else in the industry — it’s supposed to prove how hardcore we are and what a deep love and understanding of games we must have. But it actually proves the exact opposite. We are dumber than a five year-old who sees a poster for a Pixar movie or whatever in the theater, lights up, then breaks down crying because it’s not coming out till the summer. Make sure you read that right, too — not AS dumb. Literally dumber, because at least with the kid, he has to see the poster to tip those dominoes. With too many gamers, this sort of gross entitlement that transcends all notions of immaturity has been, at this point, built in. We don’t need the poster to set us off, because we’re always ready to blow.

As adults, we are at a point in our lives when we are supposed to have more interests and obligations than ever, from work, to starting our own families to however many billions or trillions of hours of film, television, music, video, literature, and yes, video games we have right at our fingertips… The irony that “gaming droughts” just NOW become a thing the community is all colicky about is really something else. Thing is, if you tell me, “But I don’t have a family! Video games are my only hobby and like my whole life!”, I still can’t take that seriously. If video games are really the end-all-be-all of your existence, then you would A.) have a broad enough palate for them to have a backlog you’d probably never finish, and B.) understand the work and necessities behind game development. I’ll tell you this… If being a “gamer” means sitting in a highchair, spitting and crying all over my bib for Mommy Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony to bring me my applesauce, then I’m no damn gamer.

Now to segue from calling out the hysterical fuckwits out there, to addressing the people who are more than mental man-children, like Francis, making more reasonable criticisms such as Nintendo needs to make sure they have a constant stream of games… Look, I’m not saying someone can’t be FRUSTRATED that x game isn’t out at y time, or that something they were looking forward to got delayed. Frustration is fine, go ahead and express it and how you wish it could be different. But when people criticize a dev/publisher for delays, game offerings, and “droughts”, you have to understand that 95% of the time, it flies in the face of the reality of the situation. A reality that applies to EVERYONE, not just Nintendo.

So speaking of, let’s look to an example concerning PlayStation. A year or two ago, I’m watching a video from some guy, talking about the woes of the Vita. One of the things he’s saying is what a huge mistake it is that Sony/Naughty Dog didn’t work on a Vita Uncharted game themselves, that they instead got the “B-team” (although at this point, I prefer Bend to ND) to make Golden Abyss. Now, let’s think about his for a second: why was this a “mistake”? Sure, you can say that IDEALLY, it’d be great if Naughty Dog had found a way to produce a typical Uncharted for Vita, and hey, another one too! Two full-fledged Uncharted games for Vita, from the original creators, at the same time we get Uncharted 3, The Last of Us, and Uncharted 4.

Except… We live in reality, don’t we? There’s a difference between what you SHOULD do, and what is IDEAL. There’s a limit to what Naughty Dog can humanly accomplish, to how much they can work on and manage effectively. They have to have priorities pursuant to reality; if they had worked on a Vita Uncharted title, then that would obviously have implications for their work on Uncharted 3 and TLoU. There was no team of people at Naughty Dog sitting around that coulda/woulda/shoulda made a Vita Uncharted; everyone was working on projects already in production. SO, if they live in reality (which they do, y’know), they have to make a call on whether it makes more sense to work on Golden Abyss for Vita and let Uncharted 3, TLoU and every game after that suffer or be delayed for it, or whether it makes more sense to continue their work on the latter two and entrust the former to a capable sister studio. They made a reasonable decision, to the best of their ability.

With Nintendo then, we all know that everyone at EAD isn’t going into work everyday, spending their hours trying to see how much gum they can stick to the bottoms of their chairs, right? Right (I hope I’m right). Everyone there is working their hardest and doing their best. So what kind of things might we hear from overzealous fans then? “Hire more people! Create new studios! Invest in this or that!” Okay. We all know hiring is a selective process, right? All companies look for certain people, with certain qualifications and sensibilities, that they believe will fit in and ultimately do good work. Some companies are more stringent in how selective they are… Most of us understand Nintendo’s standards are as high as anyone’s. Then, however talented those new hires start off, there’s the matter of effectively guiding, mentoring and managing them, something EVERY new face who’s come up developing Super Mario Galaxy, 3D World, Splatoon, Zelda, what have you, has been clear about making sure people understand is very important. There is only so much existing senior staff, only so many people like Miyamoto, Tezuka, Takeda, Tanabe, Aonuma, etc. to actually bring everything together, and nurture the ability to bring everything together in the younger generations.

But hey, it doesn’t stop there. What about space constraints? Do they have facilities large enough to accommodate nonstop expansion? If they hire a lot more people, don’t they have to deal with how that effects the workplace or possibly building extensions? Don’t they have to think about whether they not only have the raw numbers, but the right MIXES of people and positions to actually make whole new games? If they create new subsidiaries, don’t they have to worry about installing staff at every level and stretching their executives/producers even thinner among all of them? Don’t they have to consider whether they have the resources to localize all these new RPGs/shooters/etc. theoretically being made now, and possibly make all the considerations I just listed ALL OVER AGAIN for everywhere else in the world? Don’t they have to consider whether all of this makes sense to invest in, over other areas, initiatives, deals and projects in the works? Isn’t it true that I’m NOT EVEN PUTTING A DENT IN THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG?

If you think this is a damn long post now, I can’t even imagine the lengths to which it would stretch if I could actually think of and understand all the obstacles and considerations facing a multi-billion dollar multinational consumer electronics and software company. But I’m definitely hitting on at least a few of the realities that way, way too many people gloss right over when they make naive, shortsighted critiques like, “They need to hire more people! They need to open new studios to port third-party games and pump out RPGs!” What we need is for the community to at least TRY and be mindful of reality when they open their mouths or set to typing. Games take men. Games take man hours. Games take talents, skill-sets, insights, budgeting, management and so, so much more, to be realized. This is true for EVERYONE: Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Even when a game’s mediocre, like The Order, it doesn’t mean that its production isn’t a massively trying and elaborate undertaking. None of them wake up in the morning to find the Game Stork has delivered them a happy bundle of completed levels, models, textures, gameplay, etc.

Even when we’re talking about games being “held back”, like with Devil’s Third… I mean, in Nintendo’s case, we’ve actually seen them space out titles, just like you’re asking, Francis — they delayed Tropical Freeze a few months, remember? Instead of dropping 3D World, Pokemon, multiple Zelda games AND Donkey Kong on people all at once, they spaced things out. They did. And was that move praised? No. It was met with backlash — negativity was the consensus, not positivity. You can even go on YouTube and find at least one mental child who completely and utterly shit his pants over this move… I’m talking diaper-sagging, dribbling down the leg, kicking diarrhea into the camera lens caliber pants-shitting here. We’re going through it RIGHT NOW, with Nintendo’s E3 2015, the reaction, and the NX. Iwata said it himself; the stuff shown off was based on development realities, which are changing with the imminent NX. They are trying to restructure things to make sure they have those titles, heavy-hitters and flow for NX. Does the community recognize that? No. They went into a full-scale meltdown precipitating endless in-fighting and bickering, that continues even now. How fucking pointless….

We, as players, CAN criticize the games we play. We can criticize their narrative, their mechanics, their characters, their music, their look and feel. We can criticize companies for promising one thing and delivering another, for taking advantage of people, for tumbling down, down, down in their legacies (*cough*Capcom*cough*Konami*cough*). That goes for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and everyone else. But trying to criticize how they do everything they do, as a business, and how they work on what and when it’s released? It has to be asked if we’re really qualified to make those criticisms. We almost never are.

Like I said, you can hope and wish for anything you want. Get disappointed, get frustrated with whatever. But stop short before you actually presume to instruct an operation way beyond your understanding on when or how they have to release a product. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, then it’s not really criticism, because it doesn’t in reality address anything. Then it just becomes nonsense, and it’s not even worth getting upset over; go do something else. Second guess their products and motivations if you want, but please try and accept that Shuhei Yoshida, Phil Spencer and yes, Satoru Iwata, have tried their best to keep their operations up, running, sustainable, with the games inbound. Okay?

    Okay.

    • Marsega

      Hmmm… interesting post.

      • chrgby

If you actually read that whole thing, I apologize. But I’d been meaning to get it off my chest for awhile. The glibness of some criticism really sticks in my craw. I mean, if you’re going to tell someone, “Don’t do that this way, but this way instead,” you have to know what you’re talking about, right?

        • Marsega

          True true.

    • Aztec

I don’t think this could have been written better. You are a good person.

    • venomjamaica

I totally agree with you 100000000%

Yes I have read your post. Twice in fact. Great read ……….. thumps up.

      big up yuself bossy.

      • CapableTie

I can understand Nintendo having droughts, they are doing the best they can. However I have a problem with them holding back games or having gaps between regions.
It’s really more apparent this year than ever before from what I remember.

  • Jon Turner

IMO, there is no point badmouthing third parties anymore. Regardless of how their games turn out, Nintendo’s next system needs them. Period. Without them NX will suffer the same fate. Now getting full support will be difficult, yes. But that doesn’t mean Nintendo shouldn’t try to make its next system easy to port their games to OR even gauge audience interest in which particular third party game their customers want to play most.

    • Marsega

Jon, I’m sorry that i’m saying this, but can you please calm down? Its almost like your saying that this is Nintendo’s last chance to redeem themselves.

      • Jon Turner

I don’t personally believe it’s Nintendo’s “last chance.” Nor am I intended to put it across as such. Nor do I feel like I’m ranting. I’m just saying that they’ll need to make improvements for their next system. Getting thirds back is a start.

        • Marsega

          Oh, i see. Sorry.

        • wyster7

What thirds need to do is get off their asses and optimize their games for Nintendo’s consoles. Power means nothing if you don’t know how to optimize it. They lack conviction.

    • Travis Touchdown

Except none of those projects are going to pan out very well at all. They are absolutely worth ignoring, considering all the nonsense they’ve pulled over the years. Nintendo is not at fault for their behavior.

      • Jon Turner

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute here. First of all, to say that all third party games upcoming are going to turn out badly is just like jumping the gun. Now yes, some third party games HAVE turned out badly this gen. But that doesn’t mean all of them will.

Also, sorry, but the argument of “worth ignoring” these games, that may work in favor of Nintendo fans who expect quality, but in truth, it only succeeds in damaging Nintendo’s credibility more and more. That’s what got WiiU into this mess in the first place. Without a wide variety of titles — and not just the same old first party titles either — NX will only suffer the same fate as WiiU. I’m serious.

We can’t keep on going around proclaiming third parties are evil and Nintendo does nothing wrong. Nintendo just made some unfortunate mistakes this gen. Not doing enough to push WiiU when the press was jumping on it negatively. Failing to hype the system and market it to the correct audience. Not ensuring that whatever third party projects they got justified purchasing the console. The lackluster selection of games. The constant delays. And a disappointing E3. Seriously, do you think thirds are all responsible for that? No, it was Nintendo’s doing. Now, yes, SOME thirds DID cause damage, but Nintendo messed up, too.

A console cannot succeed without third party support. Period. Even if you may not particularly like the third party games in question or even be crazy about them, losing them will only kill NX just as it did WiiU. We can no longer go around fighting this anti-third party war and white-knighting Nintendo all the time when they make mistakes, too. Both sides need to come together to make a compromise. NX needs a variety of titles, and Nintendo alone cannot do them. Indies are no replacement; they can create fun filler titles, but they’re just not in the same league. So I’m sorry, but my point stands.

        • Travis Touchdown

No, those companies simply have no real talent. No real talent means no real games.

The WIi U is not a difficult console to port games too: We’ve known this for a long while now. It really does boil down to nothing more than devs not wanting to compete with Nintendo on their own hardware.

They were unwilling to support the Wii, an incredibly easy to develop for system at the time that was super successful financially. It’s entirely their problem.

          • WSJ4L

The argument that the Wii U is difficult to port to especially falls flat when devs are still making cross gen games.

They were unwilling to support the Wii, and they’re still unwilling to support the 3DS; both of which they should have made easy money on.

          • Jon Turner

It is difficult to port PS4/XB1 games to WiiU, though. Not so much PS3/XB360 ones.

If Wii had the same architecture as PS3/XB360, it probably WOULD have received ports. Likewise, If WiiU’s architecture was in the same league as PS4/XB1, it would get ports. This time I don’t want Nintendo to make the same mistake again. I want their next console to be capable of running these titles.

WiiU MAY be a fine system, but Nintendo’s choices for how it went haven’t worked out for them at all, and they won’t want to do so again for their next console.

          • WSJ4L

Except third parties had no problem porting to systems with different architecture in the past, yet it’s only a problem when it comes to the Wii U.

Regarding the Wii, did developers suddenly forget how to develop for last gen? Plus it would’ve been incredibly cheap to do so. That, coupled with the large install base of the system, should’ve meant easy returns for them on their investment.

Again, the 3DS has both the install base and the ease of developing for it - where was the support?

          • Travis Touchdown

You are so determined to blame Nintendo for this, it’s ridiculous.

Nothing you said was actually true: Nintendo, getting a Resident Evil game? Capcom thought we would like rail shooters based on old games. Spin offs are just that: Spinoffs. Sure, some were great, but they were far from what we actually deserved, the real thing. Ports of old content is simply not ‘good’ third party support, regardless of what PS4 fans will tell you.

Third parties will always make excuses not to develop for Nintendo hardware. They know they are not in control of the situation. That fallout with Nintendo and EA over the eshop is a pretty good example of this.

  • Blake Wigert

3rd parties are scum, Nintendo could make the best console ever and they still wouldn’t be supported. what Nintendo needs to do is hire enough peaople so they can make games year round without losing their quality. As for Devil’s Third, I think that game will fail badly. 3rd parties are in control of whether their games do well or not. Nintendo spoils us with great games and when 3rds aren’t willing to match or exceed that, then of course we won’t buy the inferior product. I’m sick of every big name game skipping Nintendo. It is almost like we get punished for choosing quality games. Don’t even say ‘get a Sony/Microsoft console.” I hear that too often and it makes my blood boil. Why should we Nintendo gamers have to get a secondary console to play 3rd party games? No one else has to, so why should we?

    • Liquid-Sunrise

Well said. Nintendo needs to rely only on themselves at this point.

      • Blake Wigert

Thank you, and I agree that Nintendo can only trust themselves! 3rd parties have proven time and again that they don’t want our money and sadly it is us, the gamers, that get screwed in that equation.

        • Liquid-Sunrise

I say, Nintendo needs to stick with the collaborations with the Japanese
3rd parties like Namco, Atlus, or Platinum Games.

          • Jon Turner

No. Nintendo should continue collaborations with those companies AND try to make sure their next system isn’t so difficult to port to. Now granted, yes, there still might be some who may be wary about putting their games on the console, but closing the door completely to third parties altogether and going self-reliant is only going to make Nintendo look more and more irrelevant. Think about the disappointing E3 they had this year and the poor choices they made this gen. Do you really believe Nintendo should keep on doing these mistakes and not getting enough of a variety of games for their customers to play and not have anymore droughts?

Nintendo doesn’t have to pay for every third party game to hit their system. But doing nothing to fix the situation will only make the problems WORSE instead of better. Saying that Nintendo should say FU to thirds will only kill NX just like it did WiiU. The strategy for WiiU isn’t working, and so they will have to do another for NX. Getting thirds on board, or at least making their system capable enough of running the games in question without so much as a hiccup is a start.

Sorry, but the time for railing against thirds and white-knighting Nintendo all the time is coming to an end. Both sides have erred. We can kvetch all we want about thirds not bringing their games to Nintendo platforms. But Nintendo made their share of errors, too.

    • FalconLawnch

      Because you keep choosing the consoles built by a platform holder that;

      - Flipped off the entire industry by putting out a cart-based console when everyone else wanted to move on to CDs.
      - Rarely gets third parties involved in the early stages of their new consoles’ development process.
      - Often hands out devkits to third parties much later than the other two.
      - Hasn’t given third parties the kind of specs or features they would rather work with since the Gamecube era.
      - Goes around saying stuff like “We don’t believe in overwhelming third party support.”

I mean, it should be pretty clear by now; Nintendo doesn’t really care about doing the legwork to get third parties on their side and third parties know that they don’t need Nintendo in order to succeed (as shown by every generation since the PS1). So you can either call for Nintendo to get their shit together on that front alongside other disappointed fans, or buy a PS4, Xbox One or PC for your third party needs. Simple as that.

Apparantly Nintendo IS trying to do so with NX if Francis’ “MGS” report has anything to say about it.

I think it’s obvious that Nintendo is having a hard time trying to make games for two systems (Console and Handheld), they could do that back in the day, but as time goes on it takes longer to make games now a day’s, so I think having a shared library would help the droughts, I believe Iwata(rest in peace) did say something like that last year.
