Nintendo Wii U 25 Owner of Rakuten says Wii U and iPad are most Popular Christmas Presents for kids

The Wii U’s sales seemed to have turned around quite a bit, as the system has seen a 75% sales spike since October. The Wii U and iPad are Twitter’s most discussed Christmas presents for kids.

The Xbox One and PS4 have limited stock, so this might result in increased Wii U sales according to the retailer. Based on their own Twitter analysis, Rakuten said the Wii U and iPad are “the most talked about presents for children this Christmas”.

“The marketplace’s social media analysis surprisingly showed that the brand new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles are trailing in second and third place respectively behind the Wii U and iPad.

This is despite the fact that both new consoles sold out on Rakuten’s during Black Friday, which have since been restocked. It appears that those on the hunt for the latest consoles are gamers rather than consumers buying for their loved ones.”

Thanks eyeofcore for the tip!

PE’s Take:

Nintendo is starting to turn things around. Next year is even going to be better with Super Smash Bros U, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta, X, Shin Megami, and more we don’t know about.

This is news that is probably scaring cynics and analysts every where. We as Gamers on the other hand are enjoying it.

Unlike those so called "True Gamers" who keep rubbing the PC in our faces calling it the master race. I'm looking at you ReviewTechUSA, and BlackB0nd. Yes I already know that the PC's graphical hardware is widely superior to the hardware of consoles but, that doesn't mean that its perfect especially when playing PC ports like Sonic Generations which has a lot of bugs that haven't been fixed yet.

Another thing that annoys up the ass is when the so called "hardcore gamers" tell me that I shouldn't get the Wii U because it has weaker hardware when it can still compete with the PS4. (P.S. the reason I'm not mentioning the Xbox One is because to me it's a failure that has furthered doomed the Xbox division.) Graphics aren't everything and I'm more of a platformer gamer than I am a FPS gamer with Star Wars Battlefront 2 being my favorite FPS Video game of all time. The Wii U has more quality titles than the PS4 and the Xbox One games like: Sonic Lost World, Super Mario 3D World, Wonderful 101, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, Nintendo Land, and New Super Mario Bros U.

      So Take that Fanboys!

Takes a lot of money and a lot of technical know how to get a good PC rig going. There are also so many different ways to do it as well. The limiting factor will be the software. For a software maker hitting the right specs is like hitting a moving target. A skilled software developer like Nintendo can do amazing things a console in it's aprox five or so year lifespan. It takes more and time and skill to wring out every last ounce of performance from a console. For most (lazy) developers they feel it's a waste of time and effort to go that far. Course most 3rd party developers are not burdened with the research and development cost of new hardware.

It's not surprising. The past few years a lot of parents have refused to buy Nintendo hardware because they thought that mobil was the way to go. I work at Gamestop and I see that many parents are now understanding why they should be getting their children 3DS's. It's cheaper then an iPad Mini, there are no expensive in-app purchases, it's way more durable, has more multiplayer games, and the parents don't need to share their devices.

As for the Wii U, there have been an alarming amount of people I talk to at work that don't know of a lot of the new features on the Wii U. Oh well, nothing like being paid to talk about what the Wii U does that makes it awesome. I actually enjoyed work on Black Friday.

Gamers are mostly waiting for the next steam console while spending some cash on the cheaper system which is the Wii U plus when the PS4 and the Xbox One were released they had many technical issues that the Wii U didn't have which hurts them even more along without having any good quality release titles.

But..but…but….Nintendo won’t make it to next Christmas!!!!

  • timg57867

Not surprising, considering how immensely Nintendo's marketing has been improving lately. Also helps that they gave up their practically hopeless quest of attracting "hardcore" gamers.

  • ryuken13

glad my son is grown.. iPads and Wii U are both big and expensive christmas gifts!! Kids just want the goods nowadays lol. Glad Wii U is doing well. Waiting on X or Zelda..

  • PlayersChoiceNetwork

Well Nintendo won't stop from here. 2014 will be even more dangerous to the gaming market with better games of course and probably better overall system performance and OS. I'm calling right now in 2013 that Wii U will be the hottest selling in 2014 as well. The Wii U can do everything the other systems can do but cheaper and free online.

-TVii just as good as Xbox One Tv function IMO if not better

    – Sharing Video will be possible as soon as Mario Kart 8 launches (see

    For Mario Kart Specifically

    -1080p 60fps games

-REAL Tablet controls and the BEST Motion controls hands down

    – Great Online Gaming experience With MiiVerse

Dude, next year is going to be so cosmically epic, it won't even be funny. They thought Nintendo dropped bombs this year…. wait until the big guns come out to play. Smash Bros….. Mario Kart….. Bayonetta….. X…… I can't even begin to conjure what secrets Nintendo has up their sleeves too. Just look at the 2DS…. now imagine what they might have in store for the NFC capability. Think about the other ways they're going to improve on their online. Wait until they show the ZELDA trailer O….M…..G…..!!!!!! It is going to be so epic that the world of gaming isn't going to be ready for it. It is going to be so cosmically grand, that the competition is going to have to take notice. IT is going to be SO awesome that E3 just might only be the beginning! I can't wait, and thus my post is concluded, thank you lol.

Those articles are wonderful. Thank you for sharing lol, and the one with "The Shining" reference is hilarious lol.

No problem. Figured someone had to be reporting the good news besides just Francis.

I just love how MCVUK defers responsability for posting this Wii U good news. Here is their disclaimer:
"It should be noted though that from what MCV understands about recent Wii U sales numbers,’s findings don’t seem especially representative of the overall market."

It's game over, people. The Wii U is on fire! 🙂

  • Nintendo Power

It has begun… This is what happens when you try to F around with Nintendo, when all they tryin' to do… is be themselves…

  • Twinkie5000

Bu bu but Nintendo is irrelevant as a hardware manufacturer. And PS4/Xbox One was suppose to burry the Wii U. And the Wii U had launch issues which has never happened before.

    • JTurner82

      Not. Anymore.

  • ZainreFang

    Keep it moving, Nintendo!

Keep that momentum. If only other sites would make articles like this. There is a false perception of Wii U's success everywhere.

    Nuff Said.
