Steam will be launching a portable Steam Machine called the Smach Zero next year. The release is set for Q4 2016 with a pre-order price of $299.99. However, if you wait till it launches to buy it, it will cost more than that, so people who pre-order will get a discount. Here are the specs for the device:

- 4GB or RAM

- 720p Touchscreen

- HDMI output, Bluetooth and Wifi

- 32 GB of Internal storage

- Runs Valve’s SteamOS

The only way this system will have a chance is if it has dedicated games. Those specs can run very few new games but it is good for emulating and old pc games.

Sounds like a rip off of Gameboy.

It looks uncomfortable to hold. Or like it’s supposed to be propped up on your knee as you play it.

  • Game_God

gonna bet a testie that this will fall real flat…

  • ednice

    Why a touch screen though?

  • Hidden Flare

Well this could work but is it enough, it doesn’t have any exclusives or difference from a normal steam machine, so I question how good this will turn out.

$300 for a handheld? Assuming this can play the majority of Steam games, I would probably consider it if it weren’t for the price.

It can’t. It runs SteamOS, i.e. the only games you’d be able to play natively on it are ones for which Steam offers a Linux version. And those games are a minority.

Nintendo is the only one who has ever been able to capture the handheld market. The specs on this thing are strong though, it has some potential I guess.

    Good Grief, hahahahahaha.

its more than wiius 2gb WII U IS A EDRAM MACHINE WITH COMPRESSION TECH

YOUR COMPARING ORANGES TO APPLES STEAM OS IS RUNNING GENERIC PC CODE

    FOR MORE RESOURSE HOGGING

is 4gb enough doesnt make any sense HOW DOES THE MACHINE RUN stop comparing every device to HOW A BLOATED PC RUNS

I DONT SEE IPHONE 6 WITH 1GB RAM AND TWO CPU CORES HAVING TROUBLE BLOWING AWAY ANDROID 8 CORES

  • Tedthesporthead

not a techy guy, but is 4GB enough?

    • awang0718

      It’s more than the Wii U’s 2GB.

      • Tedthesporthead

Surely you are kidding. The U has only 2GB?

        • awang0718

Not kidding at all. The Wii U has 2 GB of RAM.

          • Tedthesporthead

Don’t know much about the inner workings of consoles but that sounds very low. Got to admit though that the games run very smooth. Does the job

          • JaxonH

That’s half what the PS4 has for RAM and twice what Wii U has, and this is just a handheld.

I’d say that’s pretty good. By far the most powerful handheld we’ve ever seen.

Question is, will it be for running games natively (if so 32gb is NOT going to cut it) or will it be for streaming from PC ala Nvidea Shield
