Psychonauts 2 Needs $18 Million in Funding, Notch Ditches Financial Support
Psychonauts 2 looked like it could have happened when Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson tweeted Tim Schafer saying they should make it happen. However, the game needs $18 million to get made. Notch has stated he will not back the project.
Notch discussed what happened in a Reddit thread saying, “I somewhat naively thought ‘a couple of million’ was two million. I had no doubt in my mind that a Psychonauts 2 would earn that money back easily. Turns out they wanted 18 million dollars, haha.”
Notch’s studio Mojang made a hefty $240 million last year alone, but Notch is not ready to dish out that amount of cash. Notch did say they enjoy the idea of funding projects in the future.
“Perhaps in some distant future when I’m no longer trying to make games, I could get into angel investing. I’ve made one private investment into a game so far, at $100K, and it’s frankly a lot more work than I thought.”
I never played the first Psychonauts, but from everything I’ve heard, its a great game. Hopefully Schafer can get the game made at some point.
