The Sonic Stadium has rounded up some juicy details on Sonic Boom for the Wii U and 3DS. Apparently the 3DS has some “surprises” in store for consumers, and it will connect with the Wii U version. SEGA’s Stephen Frost and Kellie Parker reveal new details in the interview below.

Here are the highlights of the interview from Sonic Stadium.

– Big Red Button and Sanzaru Games have developers who have worked on franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, True Crime, Shrek, God of War, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Ghostbusters, and the Simpsons.

– The 3DS version is a separate experience from the Wii U version and is developed by Sanzaru Games. “We have a few surprises to announce in relation to the 3DS game, but you’ll just have to wait and see what they are.”

– “The 3DS game will have some connectivity with the Wii U but details of that have not yet been announced.”

– Sonic Boom will be a mix of 3-D and 2-D Gameplay. However, exploration will be a focus for Sonic Boom. Big Red Button is looking to provide a “familiar but new” experience. The will be 2-D elements but “maybe with a few twists.”

– Each character will have multiple unique abilities. The team is looking to include as many classic Sonic abilities and attacks as possible. However, some of the classic ones won’t work in the type of game Sonic Boom is. Fans will appreciate what they have done and the new abilities added to Sonic Boom.

Sonic Boom is set for release on the 3DS and Wii U in 2014.

I remember reading at a few sites that Sonic Boom is taking inspiration from Sonic 2, Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Generations, so I'm not surprised that Sonic Boom will have at least a few 2D sections. I have to admit, I've never been much of a proponent of an exploration-based, more open Sonic game, mainly because I've always thought that it couldn't work very well. But I'm loving what I see so far, and considering the people working on this game, I wouldn't be surprised if Big Red Button ends up proving me wrong.

You know, Big Red Button should work on character design for the next Star Fox.

My hype meter is already at 11. Sonic Boom is gonna be one of the surprise hits available for the Wii U… and the beauty powered by CryEngine 3.

Sonic Lost World wasn't as good as I had hoped, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited for this game…

After seeing that Cryengine 3 tech demo and reading the interview I can't wait to see what this game will look like when done. It looks absolutely stunning.
