In a recent interview, Sony President Kaz Hirai hinted the PS4 might release after the Xbox 720 saying, “why go first when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?” This would be a horrible mistake that shows Sony is not confident in their own product. The PS4 should be released when it ready, not when Microsoft shows their hand first. Playeressence’s Furious Francis discusses how this decision could hurt Sony in the long run and what Sony should do with the PS4

The PS4 Releasing last gives the Wii U and Xbox 720 more time to get their AAA Games
Nintendo is starting to bring their big games out. A new Smash Bros, Zelda, Mario Kart, 3D Mario, Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 4, Xenoblade 2, and more all are coming out within the next couple years. The more time Sony takes waiting for Microsoft, gives Nintendo more time to bring out their AAA games. Microsoft will also get the jump on Sales. Third party exclusives are a dying out, but don’t let Microsoft get the first round of next generation games. Sony needs to be day and date when they are released. We also know Microsoft is working on Halo 5. Microsoft wants to get that game out as fast as possible halt PS4 sales with a killer app. Don’t give them more time to develop that game before your own AAA games are ready Sony.
Your Platform Should Already be Flexible
The PS4 and Xbox 720 should be flexible machines that can add features through simple firmware updates. Whats the need of waiting for Microsoft to play their hand, when anything they have can be added through a firmware update? Look at the PS3 and Xbox 360, both of those systems are drastically different from how they were when they first launched. Tech specs shouldn’t be a concern as the Xbox 360 was technically weaker than the PS3, yet third party games looked the same. Sony first party games will look awesome no matter what. Games > Tech Specs.
Sony, Regain your sense of Pride
Sony, are you that scared of Microsoft releasing a system more capable you’ll halt the PS4 cause of it? What will you accomplish by that? Did Sony wait for the N64 in the PS1 days? Nope. Did Sony wait for the Xbox 1 and GameCube? Nope. Back then, Sony had confidence in their software and hardware. Nintendo is currently dominating the Japanese hardware charts. Sony needs to remember they use to be in that spot for more than a decade. Sony never got their waiting for other systems to be released. Sony fans are ready for the PS4, they don’t care if its stronger or weaker than the Xbox 720. They just want to play their exclusives on it.
Sony, let your games do the Talking, not your Hardware
Sony has always done a good job creating cinematic experiences players get really excited about. You have the IPs to beat Microsoft, even if their system is stronger. The PS4 is the only place you can play God of War, Killzone, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, PlayStation All Stars, Pixel Junk, Heavy Rain, The Last of Us, and more I probably missed. Hire a new marketing team, figure out a way to streamline development, and get your AAA content to retail and PSN before Microsoft even knew what hit them.
Sony’s already Tried this Strategy
Sony has rebounded fully from the $599 US disaster that was E3 2006, to put up a respectable console with some killer IPs. The Xbox 360 had a huge lead on the PS3 because Sony decided to release their system a year later. Letting Microsoft get that big lead again would not be smart. Although Sony has caught up now, it took them about eight years to do it.
What do you guys think? Should Sony release the PS4 before, at the same time, or after the Xbox 720? We would love to hear what you guys have to say in the comments below.
