Super Mario 3D World Sales Break past 1 Million, While Knack and Lighting Returns tank

super_mario_3d_world_artwork

Super Mario 3D World’s opening week sales were absolutely destroyed by the media. Unfair comparisons, proclamations of being outsold with missing information, and just flat-out sensational titled articles, infested the internet for weeks regarding Super Mario 3D World’s sales. But as the dust settled, and the Wii U sold more units, Super Mario 3D World is proving to be an “evergreen” title. While Lighting Returns and Knack sales have fallen off a cliff.

Super Mario 3D World didn’t have as much time to track in the Media Create for its debut. But it has continued to sell at a great pace. As of now, Super Mario 3D World has sold more than 327,514 units in Japan. VGChartz has tracked the game at 1.02 million units sold, not counting digital.  Super Mario 3D World ranked 8th in the Tsutaya Charts from Sunday. So we know it probably sold an excess of 60,000 units plus in this week’s Media Create Charts. Lighting Returns Final Fantasy 13 has completely dropped out of the top 20. At this point, the game has sold around 373,592 units the last time it charted. That means Super Mario 3D World has probably already passed up Lighting Returns. What makes this more impressive is the Wii U’s install base is only around 1.5 million compared to the almost 10 million owners of the PS3 in Japan.

I scoffed at people making such a big deal about Mario’s opening day sales in Japan. It’s not how you start, it’s about how you finish. On top of that, Super Mario 3D World is one of the most downloaded games on the Wii U eShop due to the Digital Deluxe program and small file size. Funny how all those sites forgot to mention that.

Next, we have ‘Knack outselling Super Mario 3D World’ headlines. This was based on zero numbers other than a position chart where the officials are too scared to show the data, in fear of people mocking how insignificant the market is. I’ve heard MyNintendoNews say the UK is the biggest market in Europe. Is that so? Well if they’re ‘so big,’ why don’t they show off their console and software numbers like the Media Create? The UK is irrelevant without the rest of Europe. And Knack is getting crushed by Super Mario 3D World now, there is no comparison. Knack has sold less than 400,000 units, and has completely fallen off the global video games sales charts. While Super Mario 3D World is constantly racking up triple digit sales, in addition to topping the eShop charts. Where are all the headlines now?

The point of this article is to show people that Nintendo games sell for a long period of time. If you look at the sales ranks. Games like Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros, Wii Sports Resort, Animal Crossing New Leaf, and other Nintendo games sell steady amounts  for months, if not years. Making a big deal out of one game outselling a major first-party Nintendo title in the first week is foolish, because we all know who’s going to sell more in the long run.

**Disclaimer**

VGChartz is not 100% reliable when it comes to numbers. However, the Media Create is.

Another surprise I have, I will announce fully when all is ready and have a chance to touch base with Francis and get his Green Light before I say too much… But What I can say is that I bought a Web Domain fully Hosted and Maintained, and I'm currently building the Website as I type this. What it will be is simply a Social Cyber Café with a focus on finding a significant other, or just friends…

The Special touch Im giving it though is that the main purpose is finding people who share your passions, essentially being very much like you, and instead of wasting time at messy gossip sites, you can actually make better connections. There will be many Communities each with their own Theme and Unique Atmosphere. Of course my personal Baby will be the Video Game Community lol… which is where my "Sit Down" with the Big Boss Furious comes in. There will be full Video Commercials, and I will be adding loads of content as I progress further. Thankfully I have plenty of equipment and full Technical Backing of a worldwide web of Ministries and wow I have access to Video Cameras, Sound systems, Microphones, Instruments, ETC…

I have a Talented small Tight Knit Team of go getters who aren't afraid to pull their sleeves up and work with me in the Community's Homeless, which I am Recording and editing into a show, with different episodes taking on different challenges in the community. That's tied in with the Religious Community on my site. Well Ive said a little too much already lol, but Im excited.

This can be a great thing, and PE deserves to be fully backed on my Site. More details later guys, and Francis you can Holler at me at your earliest convenience… I think I already PM'd you my Contact information, but I'll update it again… Have a great one guys! Happy New Year!

It looks like Mario’s ‘still’ got it.

With an evergreen title like Mario 3D world helping the Wii U gain momentum, I can’t wait to see even more in-house first-party games (Tropical Freeze, MonolithSoft’s “X”) as well as more exclusives (Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem, Hyrule Warriors) to join Mario in sustaining that momentum.

As 2014 approaches, it should be a great year for the Wii U and Nintendo once they keep on doing what they do best and that is ‘making good games’. ^_^

  7. Metalheadgamer8 says:

wow, it's such a surprising surprise, lol.

  8. titangamecube says:

Well duh. When a you make a game like a movie, it performs like one. When you make a game like a board game, it lasts forever.

  9. ChariotMan7 says:

Nintendo has done it again. And I remember people was saying that Knack for PS4 outsold more then Super Mario 3D World. Now look what done happen Lol. Wii U Now your playing with power!

  10. ryuken13 says:

    Here's a question..

Why do the sales numbers matter??

Glad Nintendo is doing well but regardless of system if you like it get it.. If you don't don't..

Does it really matter how well something sells if you purchase it and enjoy it?

The sales numbers are great for investors with stock or those planning to get it..

Other than bragging rights or stuff to argue about the sales stats are meaningless to the rest of us..

If a game sells a million plus that has no impact on my enjoyment or lack thereof in the game..

If you buy the new Mario your enjoyment should be based on your and your friend's experience in the game..
If it sells 2 copies or 200000 copies in any given week that enjoyment should not be affected at all.

    • Jumpman says:

Mostly to take comfort knowing the game you liked did well and there may be more. Good or bad sales, SM3DW won't be the end of Mario. They may cool their use of him, if sales are no to their liking. Right now, it's to early to say.

For Nintendo, they're monitoring how well Wii U software and hardware sales do during the holiday, to determine what to to with the console next year.

It was a rhetorical question and your answer proves you do not get the point I was trying to make..

        Please troll someone else.

And yes, giving facts or opinions in the manner you are doing so on this forum can be construed as trolling. IGN or Gamespot or Kraptaku are all calling your name and waiting for feedback!

    • Kage says:

      I know, right?

When it comes to the sales of hardware and software – there is only one thing that matters; profit. Not some willy-waving 'mine are better than yours' mentality.

I mean, crikey. When I was playing Mario 3D World with my brother over Christmas, the LAST thing we thought about was how well the game was selling. Same with Link Between Worlds. I'm too busy – y'know – ENJOYING the game.

      • ryuken13 says:

Lol you see my point.. You can actually sell a ton of product and still take a loss if inventory, marketing, or development costs are off..

Do you see these companies reporting net earnings??

No.. That is an actual realisic benchmark for success.

Yup when I play a game and sales are soft that week it just is not fun any more!! NOT!! Lol

  11. dathip says:

1 million in 1 MONTH and 1 week. As I always say, Playeressence=Real Gaming news. Bang BANG

  12. Aiddon says:

sounds about right; and like the 3DS comeback, journalists will avoid saying "well, we screw up on that, didn't we?" because that would be too big a blow to their egos. Too many sites seem to take cues from The Sun

  13. Kal-El says:

Looking forward to playing this game when i get Wii U next month. Base on the few gameplay trailers I've seen of it and screenshots, 3D World could turn out to be my favorite 3D Mario. It may not seem like a open world action adventure game like Mario 64 and to some degree Galaxy, but that's what i like about it. It seem like a "pure" 3D Mario platformer like 3D Land and i had way more fun with 3D Land compare to Mario 64.

  14. critch says:

Um….This is dumb. Knack is on a new platform that is supply constrained. FFX3 is only out in Japan and won't be released anywhere else until February. Not to mention that FFX3 outsold Mario there, and Knack outsold Mario in the US.

    • -ZaNT- says:

Ah yes, music to my ears.
(Assuming you're mocking those who say that)

    • TerminatorJuice says:

Knack outsold Mario in the US?! Wtf are you talking about?! Mario has sold over 460k in the US compared to Knack's 160k! And FFX3 has been out for 4 years compared to Mario which has only been out for 5 weeks, so why would you even compare those two games?! Way to bring the stupidity to this discussion!

    • Ludwigvasq says:

And here's western media brainwashed drone no 2654376.

You're just proving Francis's point, as stated in the article Knack WILL NOT be selling more big numbers anymore but SM3DW surely is. And the japanese will have better games to buy when the PS4 launch in Japan in february than Knack. FFXIII is the same, they tend to sell more "in the now", but Nintendo titles are life time sellers pal.

It would help if you actually read what the article says.

    • wdxiii says:

To quote Ratchet: “This fool is terribly misinformed.”

    • Kage says:

This article isn't about how Mario outsold Knack and Lightning Returns.

It's about how Mario outsold Knack and Lightning Returns – AND how the gaming media mislead readers by reporting the contrary; without having the full facts.

This isn't a 'LOLOL NINTEDO RULZ' piece – Francis is merely highlighting the fact that gaming sites were wrong about Mario 3D Worlds sales – and the fact the he (and the PE community) said so from the beginning. And we were right. AND the media has so far failed to post any addendum whatsoever.

  15. Shulk3150 says:

Nice Francis this artical has surprisingly appeared on N4G, is there any why we could get this to IGN? I like how PE is becoming more more popular, Congrats ur hard work pays off as it should, maybe one dad u can be reconized by Nintendo, like gameexplain and others.

  16. Jamie_Bworth says:

And I've had people laugh at me when I told them I expect this game to hit 10 million+ lifetime sales by the end of the WiiU. I swear, half this industry is stuck in this little echo chamber where all they hear is the sound of their own voice.

  17. So0 says:

Some people still really think UK (60 million) sells more than Spain (47m) Germany (80m), Italy (60m), France (65m) combined??
Geography for Dummies –> The population is 500 million in the European Union…

Just need to put "the video game market in europe" in Google and press enter. http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Video_game_industry

    • Mythosa says:

IKR!!!!! WTF. Not to mention Japan has 125 million ish. Just wait till China changes their policies (like they have been doing through the last decade like a mad man) and the 1.35 billion can be counted. It might never happen, but you never know. Honestly, they would be more likely to make their own console and games for it to spread around their country, then that will likely be the highest selling console in the world lol.

  18. Dinga says:

Did people honestly expect a game like Knack to outsell a 3D Mario game? The only reason why games like Knack sell well during their first week is because all the Sony fanboys go out and buy it day one even after it gets low scores on medicritic and then the go on Youtube saying it's the best game ever.

    • Mythosa says:

I'm still rather pissed at hip hop for that. I'm sure he must be paid for that. I have played the game and it's garbage. It's like a watered down version of a lego game without any puzzles or real quest/story structure. They he went on to say that it's varied because Knack is made up of different objects ie, ice, stone, metal ect. And how that changes the game experience. It's the SAME, just a different costume without any new abilities or benefits or faults. I was going to use a simile of how changing the colour of Links suits doesn't have any effect, then I remembered, no… In many games the different colour of his tunic does change his tributes, being able to deal with high heat sources in his red tunic or cold sources in his blue. Seriously. I just played Disney Infinity (oddly fun, albeit rather simple) has more variance in gameplay than Knack.

      • revolution5268 says:

I saw the gameplay of whack… I mean knack in Game Stop Christmas week and all I keep thinking is the Wonderful 101. My first question is how in the world is Knack a "platform/beat 'em up" game and W101 an "action" game? It should be the other way around.

  19. DePapier says:

The funny thing here is some people hating on this article will be NOWHERE TO BE FOUND once Nintendo announces in their Q3 report that they'll have sold WAY MORE than 1 million Super Mario 3D World worldwide. Talk about some butthurtness.

  20. Mac says:

Remeber when the media starting trolling because Lighting Returns sold more than 3D World? Now that its off, no one is saying anything…

    • revolution5268 says:

When did they say that? I don't believe that game will outsell SM3D worlds in the long run.

      • RicardJulianti says:

Right when the Media Create chart came out that covered the first few days of 3D World's release. Lightning Returns charted higher than Mario and the media went absolutely insane over it. A lot of them didn't even say something along the lines of "Now Mario will undoubtedly sell more in the long run" or anything like that.

Now that LR has completely nosedived, there isn't a single thing being said about it.

  21. timg57867 says:

Super Mario 3D World has almost undoubtedly sold more than a 1 million units by now which is great because that means Nintendo won't hesitate to include it in their next financial report. I estimate 3D World's sales will be 1.8 million while Wii U sales are 5.5-6 million., give or take on both.

    Also… Happy New Year's Eve!

  22. ei8bit says:

Congrats Nintendo and the team behind it!

HAppy Holidays Everyone! May you all be blessed for another year of awesomeness! Thank you GOD!

  23. Jumpman says:

Honestly, for a website complaining about misleading articles, this article is no different. Especially when it uses guesstimations from VGChartz and is written in such a fanboy-ish way.

This is almost as bad when you reported on the Ubisoft is dropping Wii U rumor, then criticized other media sites for doing the same.

    "The media lies"

    How asinine.

    • DePapier says:

      Have fun hatin'.

    • Furious Francis says:

Honestly, for a website complaining about misleading articles, this article is no different. Especially when it uses guesstimations from VGChartz and is written in such a fanboy-ish way.

      – Are you salty over the article dude? There is nothing misleading about the article. You can scratch the VGChartz if you want. Super Mario 3D World still outsold Lighting Returns in Japan with the Media Create.

I didn't lie about anything in this report. If you think VGChartz is unreliable, then thats ok, but I didn't "LIE" about any of my numbers in this report.

      • Jumpman says:

That was actually a reference to the other article. Sorry if that came off unclear.

        • Seira says:

The gaming media is all about the money. Thats why people dont like NIntendo. Nintendo doesnt let anyone control them and they sit on their cash of money.

Thats why they want them to go third party. Thats why we have a console wars. Investors ramfisted our enterprise and are now fucking the game industry up. Third parties are too. They pressured sony into making PS3's and Xboxs and the whole industry went to the shitter in gen 7. Then they did it again with MS and the Xbox. And these guys arent gaming companies. Game Consoles are an ends to a means and they just dont give a fuck. Fanboys or not that's why people dislike them. (also because sony has a habbit of lieing) But SONY and MS let themsleves as company be abused and its ridiculous. And now Sony's 79% likely of going bankrupt. Microsoft is desperately trying to stay relevant in the public's idea of "home equipment"

      • timg57867 says:

I believe he was actually referring to this article:
        http://playeressence.com/when-the-gaming-media-li

But even that article isn't BS. It's calling out BS the media made and in a way, is the writer's way of admitting to making the mistake of posting it.

    • timg57867 says:

Nice try buddy. Francis called people out for starting that rumor. He made it clear that was a rumor in the article. What if I was working a school a newspaper and one of my cohorts made this juicy story, swearing honesty and showing their "evidence", only for it later turn to be a total farce. Just because Francis posted the rumor doesn't mean he doesn't have right to complain about people making up such BS.

If anything is getting asinine around hear it's your posts. I am going to ask you take that repulsive negativity elsewhere.

      • Jumpman says:

The rumor came from Emily Rogers, who not only has a good track record (Miiverse on 3DS), but is pro Nintendo. Reporting on rumors is fine. Owning up to inaccurate ones is honorable. Calling out other sites that reported on the same rumor you did, while acting above it IS ASINING.

        • Furious Francis says:

The areas where I found the rumor were claiming it as fact. And they pointed to ZombiU, Rayman, and Splinter Cell's sales as its support.

So like I said, if you don't like my style, then you can leave, nobody is forcing you to stay here.

          • ryuken13 says:

Easy to judge someone that busts ass to provide a gaming journalism site from the sidelines like an armchair quarterback dissing a team when he gets out of breath walking to the fridge for a beer..

And anonymously?? Wow what a wimp..

            I feel for you Francis..

          • Jumpman says:

Nobody is free from criticism (including me). I expressed my problem with the article and provided evidence for it. That's all.

Don't get the anonymous rant? Pretty sure ryuken13 isn't your birth name.

          • MechaMew2 says:

But here's the problem: your evidence is either twisted to suit your agenda, or is complete utter crap. Putting it simply, you just flat out suck.

          • Furious Francis says:

You've got no evidence other than old ass articles, and links to sites who are unreliable themselves. There has been plenty of times VGChartz is sport on with their numbers. You've got nothing dude.

        • timg57867 says:

          What Francis said.

        • RicardJulianti says:

Emily Rogers has a good track record as far as rumors go…..but being pro-Nintendo? Yeah right. She writes the most ridiculous pieces that shit all over Nintendo and misreports information. She tries to tell a Japanese man who has been a game developer for a large portion of his life…how to run his Japanese gaming company….which has first and foremost catered to a Japanese audience……by saying to be more like Western companies. Said Western companies are going bankrupt left and right, "restructuring", and are scraping to make a profit when selling over 2 million units.

She isn't Anti-Nintendo….but she sure as hell isn't Pro-Nintendo either.

          • Jumpman says:

I see nothing wrong with criticizing Nintendo's disastrous handling of the Wii U. Especially when she backs up her arguments. Pretending Nintendo is infallible is the last thing journalists or fans should do.

Criticizing Nintendo doesn't mean you hate Nintendo.

          • RicardJulianti says:

I actually explicitly said that she wasn't Anti-Nintendo…

The problem is that she isn't wholly accurate with the things she posts and never looks at a bright side. Criticize, sure….but give credit where credit is due….don't just mindlessly throw negativity around. Also, pretending to know what is best for a multi-billion dollar company that is over a century old is just stupid. Especially when you have next to zero business experience.

No one here has come close to saying Nintendo is infallible, not sure where you're getting that idea. What is being said here is that the reality of the situation isn't nearly as bad as most of the media portrays it. Doom and gloom on all fronts, when really the exact opposite is happening. Did Nintendo fuck up in the beginning? You bet. Did the Wii U get "steamrolled" by the X1 and PS4? Not quite. Did the Vita "destroy" the 3DS when it released? Not a chance.

Things aren't perfect, but they aren't a complete disaster either.

    • Bay2OnWiiU4Life says:

"I’ve heard MyNintendoNews say the UK is the biggest market in Europe. Is that so? Well if they’re ‘so big,’ why don’t they show off their console and software numbers like the Media Create?"

The NPD doesn't reveal its numbers to the public either. Doesn't make it irrelevant.

And here's source on MyNintendoNews' claim.

    • Furious Francis says:

The NPD doesn't reveal its numbers to the public either. Doesn't make it irrelevant.

      – The US is the biggest market in the world. And the NPD numbers are leaked all the time, unlike the UK Charts.

      – The UK is irrelevant by itself. As part of Europe, its not.

And here's source on MyNintendoNews' claim. http://www.newzoo.com/trend-reports/uk-games-mark

This is old, its from 2012.

The Kotaku one is even even older

Nice try dude. I'm looking at the sales and Japan is a bigger market than the UK. Open your eyes.

      • Jammy says:

Japan is the only market in the world that publically releases games sales figures, to dismiss the UK or any market as irrelevant for not doing so would have to lead to the logical conclusion that you think the rest of the world is irrelevant. And yes that includes the USA.

It also stands to reason that the UK is the second biggest games market in the world – behind of course the USA. Of course that's an incredibly difficult metric to measure, as you have to choose whether you include things like mobile and internet games, if you use hardware sales, console sales, number of players or some estimate of total market worth.

I would say a sensible measure, given that we're compairing the sales of Knack to Super Mario 3d World though, would be a size of the console market in each territory. And according to VGchartz (not that I will ever promote the use of VGchartz for anything ever) the UK's console market is bigger then both Japan (albeit by only a few 10k) and every other terrirory in the world – except the USA.

No one who actually follows this stuff thought Knack was going to outsell Mario. It was more just used to signify the turbulence the Wii U launch has suffered that even Mario games are having little to no impact. Given that Mario absolutely dominated the console sales charts on the Wii with multiple mega-hits i personally just find it fascinating how quickly any product or franchise can go in and out of fashion.

        • Furious Francis says:

Japan is the only market in the world that publically releases games sales figures, to dismiss the UK or any market as irrelevant for not doing so would have to lead to the logical conclusion that you think the rest of the world is irrelevant. And yes that includes the USA.

          – The NPD gets leaked, and we can clearly see its the biggest market in the world. The UK is irrelevant by itself. With Europe its not. The UK should not be singled out as much as it is. It should be reported along with Europe. France and Spain don't get their own report charts,

It also stands to reason that the UK is the second biggest games market in the world – behind of course the USA. Of course that's an incredibly difficult metric to measure, as you have to choose whether you include things like mobile and internet games, if you use hardware sales, console sales, number of players or some estimate of total market worth.

          – I don't think so. They release zero numbers and whoever tracks their numbers from VGChartz shows on average Japan sells more hardware and software than the UK by itself. The PS4 broke the record for launch day sales of 250,000. The 3DS, Wii U, and PS3 all easily beat that in Japan.
UK doesn't release any numbers, so until i see proof, sorry they are not the biggest market next to the US. Europe might be though.

          – Once again…no its not.

          – That's not people were saying, and like I said, Super Mario 3D World…never went out of fashion ans is selling really good right now. The Wii U is selling because of Super Mario 3D World and other games it has. You have no idea what you are talking about.

          • Jammy says:

The USA does not release video games sales figures. The UK figures also get leaked if you bother to hunt around enough, I've seen them reported in gamesdev magazine and one of the other UK magazines. The very idea that releasing these figures even bares any impact on market size is dumb anyway, but the point here is your logic is flawed from inception.

            – I think the point with the UK vs Japan market is that the UK is a bigger CONSOLE (i.e. WIi + PS3 + X360) games market then Japan. This is in large part due to Japans preference for handhelds. But I think there is no doubt (According to *sigh* VGChartz data) that the UK is a bigger CONSOLE market:

            1) The Wii + X360 + PS3 userbase is (only just) bigger in the UK then Japan.
            2) The UK total software sales for Wii + X360 + PS3 this year were higher then Japan (about 25m vs 23m) despite the PS4 and Xbox One launches gobbling up a portion of UK market share.

Of course while you may argue the dismissal of handhelds is ill-mannered, I would argue that given that we're discussing the sales of games on only CONSOLES it's perfectly reasonable. Either way that's a digression – the point it makes clear is that the dismissal of the UK as some form of tertiary market laughable – given that in both console user base size and annual console software sales its the second largest in the world.

            – In all honesty most people were just poking fun at Nintendo, the Wii U and Mario yes. This isn't some anti-Nintendo media bias though, it's just common that when someone falls from such dizzying heights as Nintendo had with the Wii, to where they are now – (total Wii U sales being outsold day one by both the PS4 and Xbox One in the UK, as one example) – that people point and laugh. The exact same thing happened with Sony and the PS3 launch as well, cause well, sometimes its fun to point and laugh at things.

          • Jammy says:

Lol I ballsed up the formatting there a bit, have fun with that.

        • Mythosa says:

Are you on crack? The UK is not the second largest games market in the world. It's a tiny portion of Europe to start, just England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The population is less than 70 million people in all 4 countries. There is a lot of money and power there without doubt, but when you compare that to Japan which has nearly double the population of those 4 combined, is a greater economic power, and spends more money as a nation it's not hard to see. The whole idea of ignoring the rest of Europe and concentrating on just the UK is all sorts of mental since there are still other economic powers within Europe it's self like Germany and France.
You cannot deny that the headlines that were made with Knack outsells Mario were just sensationalism to rally the anti Nintendo people as well as rile up the pro Nintendo people to encourage more views. These people make money by how much traffic goes to the sites so they are of course searching for more hits.

          • Jammy says:

I'm merely stating that the UK is the second largest home console (i.e. PS3, Wii, X360, Wii U, ps4 etc) market in the world. This statement is backed up by VGChartz figures, where it shows the UK has a larger console userbase (PS3 + X360 + Wii) then Japan, Germany, France or any other individual nation that isn't the USA. Further the UK had the second highest home console software sales in the world (behind the USA of course) – with it selling 16m more units of software then Japan on home consoles – that's double the amount!

I'm not saying the UK is the second largest market in the world – as South Korea and China quickly come in and obliterate both the UK and Japan's total video game market valuation. Further I'm not saying the UK is a bigger market then Japan if you include handhelds like the 3DS and PSP – because it isn't. However it is true from what I can find that it is the second largest home console market, and the articles initial dismissal of it given we're looking at home console software sales is laughable.

I agree we shouldn't dismiss all of Europe either where Mario trounced Knack – I'm not trying to argue Knack outsold Mario here lol, more just that the UK is a pretty big deal when it comes to home consoles.

And yeah the press were having a bit of fun with the whole Knack outsells mario thing but I don't think this is anything specific to Nintendo. The PS3 launch had a host of similiar articles attatched to it as did the Xbox One after it announced its DRM policies. I would also point out that doing these headlines to get traffic and searching for hits is exactly what this site did on N4G – you can't exactly argue it's N4G headline isn't 'sensational' to say the least.

          • Seiren says:

Sorry the UK isnt the second largest home console market.

That would be Japan. Shocking I know.
Shit Brazil is a bigger "gaming" country in total revenue than the entirety of the European market

Consoles sell kinda eh over there.

    • Facebook User says:

Jumpman get your little stank @$s off this site. stop trying to fcuking sink our happiness like this. stop raining on our parade you fcuking unhappy son of a b!tch. I hate people like you. you come to one of the very few positive Nintendo web sites and try to sink everybody's parade . Take that bullsh!t to blackb0nds YouTube channel or neogaf

    • Seira says:

The UK is a tiny games market though Even compared to europe

  25. DePapier says:

Well, we know. But if that can help other people join PlayerEssence, it just has to be told.

  26. Cilverkid456 says:

The Media not even thinking about reporting this. The only think they are reporting is some guys hacked there Wii U gamepad for computer games or something like that. Oh by the way Mario was Named Eurogamer's Game of The Year.

    • Mythosa says:

I saw one report on that, but that's a touchy thing to report on. There are potential legal infringement that can go along with reports like that, especially if they come across like they are encouraging it, then there could also be liability as well.

    • RicardJulianti says:

They didn't really hack the gamepad as much as confuse it. They basically just got the computer to pretend it is a Wii U and then synced the pad.

Nintendo could patch it with an update….just one simple line of code that would act as a key but is hidden enough/encrypted to the point where they wouldn't be able to do it again.

    • Jumpman says:

Waiting for official numbers, or a press release from Nintendo.

Nintendo Enthusiasts did report on the Xbox One being outsold by the Wii U, but stressed the numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.
      http://nintendoenthusiast.com/news/wii-u-allegedl

      • Furious Francis says:

Yet they still used VGChartz, I don't have to stress anything when I use other sources such as Media Create and Tsutaya charts.

And I added a disclaimer, exactly why are you still complaining. Nobody agrees with you.

    • Furious Francis says:

Nobody said VGCharz is reliable, but if you have a better way of tracking sales, please let me know. On top of that, I used the Media Create, which is very reliable.

I'll give you a A for effort, four links, that's pretty good. But the "examiner" lol like they are reliable.

      • Jumpman says:

The best bet would be to wait for official sales or Nintendo's word. If Super Mario 3D World passed 1M in sales, they wouldn't waste time not promoting that.

        "Nobody said VGCharz is reliable."

But you cited it like it was, with no word of warning. That's irresponsible.

        • Furious Francis says:

I was giving proof of where I got it.

The Media uses the UK charts when there are no numbers attached to them.

I can use VGChartz as reference if I want to. The numbers are so skewed in Super Mario 3D World's, its easy to see that its selling better.

And like I said, I used Media Create for Lighting returns and Mario, Not only that, but I used eShop charts to further drive my point home.

Call it irresponsible, I call it obvious. You don't have to read it. but I added a disclaimer just for you.

          • DePapier says:

You could also add about online sales and Super Mario 3D World's rankings on eShops all around the world. It's obvious the game sold WAY more than VGChartz has been tracking. (I actually downloaded it.)

But anyway: Jumpman will get their crow once Nintendo reveals the numbers near January.

          • Furious Francis says:

Seriously, the game is actually undertracked on VGChartz. Its sold more in Japan than they are saying. And there are no digital sales. Its broke a million units.

          • Jumpman says:

Unless we're talking Steam, retail sales still heavily outweigh digital sales. Not just for Nintendo, but Sony and Microsoft. According to David Gibson, digital sales of SM3DW only made up 7% in November.
            https://mobile.twitter.com/gibbogame/status/41133

          • Furious Francis says:

And its now the end of December. 3D World has been one of the top games on the eShop.

            – Chill out dude, you've said your piece, you're not convincing anyone it hasn't reached one million units sold. If you don't like it nobody is forcing you to be on this site

          • Mythosa says:

Whether it's at a million or not doesn't really have that much merit. The basis of the article other than the title just says that it's the kind of title that will keep selling long past it's release. Even if it hasn't reached a million yet, it will and with Christmas it likely already has. You're reading too much into the title of the article.

          • RicardJulianti says:

A stat like that means next to nothing when the game only had 1 week on the market in November. I wouldn't expect a game released at the end of the month, right before the holiday season to make up a huge percentage of the month's digital sales.

            Thinking it would is ridiculous.

  27. Shadowkirby12 says:

Gee, what a suprise! ANYONE who doubted Mario's potential is dumb. These games sell for a long time.

  28. coldblooder says:

The media outlets knew full well that 3D World would easily outsell Knack in the long run. But Knack outselling it in the first few days makes for a great clickbait article.

Except for Playeressence.com and a few smaller sites, todays gaming media is all about the $$$ and not about reporting the truth and facts.

  29. Link says:

Can't wait until we get official sales numbers for 3D World, likely from Nintendo's Q3 report next month. That should shut some people up but we all know that the media is going to act like that's perfectly normal and just sweep their idiotic claims from last month under the rug much like many of them are doing now with Wii U's great sales in Japan. "Oh, but Nintendo always sells well in Japan! There's nothing to be happy about here!" while ignoring the many 4-digit numbers and sometimes low 5-digit numbers it was doing throughout this year.

  30. donzaloog says:

Some people don't seem to understand what the word evergreen means. The gaming media (and the world in general) don't think in the long term. They're only interested in what happening now. Nintendo is always thinking in the long term. Everything they do as a company is aimed at longevity.

You don't get to be 125 years old by being impulsive.

    • gamenchick says:

This is what I try explaining to people on facebook. Nintendo doesn't aim to do like the western market does and get instant sales like COD/GTA. They release titles that will sell over time and sell consistently for long periods of time.

People seem to think you need immediate COD/GTA V sells or its a failure lol

      • Link says:

That's also precisely why Nintendo can only make one game of major sellers like Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros. or Smash Bros. per system each generation. It keeps things more fresh for fans and they don't have to spend a ton of money developing another instalment because the old ones are such evergreen titles and don't crash in price weeks or months after release either because there's still demand for them.

The only major exception to this was Galaxy 2 but that was because they had so many leftover ideas which really showed when you played the game. If we do get another 3D Wii U Mario, it's very likely that it'll be different from 3D World as that'll be a major evergreen title and won't need a similar successor on the same platform.

        • gamenchick says:

I feel well get another 3D Mario in a few years, a grander scale Mario like Galaxy/Mario 64 the ''big feel'' mario entry that people were originally expecting

          • Mythosa says:

I agree. I think this ended up being a surprise for Nintendo as well as fans. I don't think this was meant to be the big Mario game, but more so filler because of the drought and just some great ideas that came together rather quickly and worked very well. The excess that it improved from E3 to release was phenomenal and that wasn't a whole lot of time.
I'm not down playing Mario 3D World in the slightest, it's a fantastic game.

          • DePapier says:

Miyamoto: "Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn't mean we'll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game." http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wiiu/s

Now that EAD Tokyo is done with 3D World and working on another project — which they confirmed in an interview with Gamekult — I'm pretty convinced that's what they're working on.

          • DylanWins says:

Honestly, I would love another game like 3D World. II really liked how it so fast paced like the 2D games, but you can move around freely like the 3D ones. However, I'm also okay with having a galaxy type game.

        • Matthew Wesley says:

Yeah, but wasn't Galaxy 2 more of an expansion to Galaxy?

          • Link says:

An expansion? That would be an insult to the game if you ask me. It added so many fresh, new ideas and somehow managed to surpass what many consider one of the best games of all time, putting many other sequels out there to shame. That's what I meant after I said Galaxy 2 was an exception to that rule.

          • gamenchick says:

I personally would NOT want a Galaxy 2. I want them to take the free roam idea from Mario 64 and give it a new idea rather than just revisit the galaxy formula again

          • Link says:

Um okay, I never implied I want them to make Galaxy 3 though..(if that's what you meant).

          • gamenchick says:

Never said you wanted a Galaxy 3

  31. gamenchick says:

What makes me laugh about the Knack outselling 3D World is if you go and look at the numbers now… 3D World is actually way ahead of Knack sales in Europe lol

and that's Playstation territory AND Knack is bundled

  32. Maestro says:

Thank Francis, people tend to forget that the sales in the gaming industry is a marathon not a sprint.

  33. Kage says:

Wow! You mean Super Mario 3D World is an evergreen title that will continue to sell well for years to come? If only someone could've predicted this would happen!

Oh yeah, that's right. Someone did. It was US. WE here on PE said this would happen.

Like you said Francis, it'll be interesting to see if the gaming media will actually report this. 'Cause they sure as hell won't admit the mistakes they made…

Anyway, this is awesome news. I should also mention that Eurogamer (Eurogamer!) just called Super Mario 3D World the best game of 2013. The comments ATM over there are hilarious.

  34. Nintendo Power says:

Excellent article Furious. We tried to tell'em! Trolls like LulzyArtist and Daveshadenuff are eating Vultures forget Crow lol. On a different note, I just found out I'm going to be a Daddy for my second time! We don't die we multiply lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh2iyPmucFk

  35. Disciple says:

Francis you are a legend. Hope your site gets some big publicity, you deserve it. Playeressence is probably the only gaming site where I feel I can get reliable and consistent gaming news. Keep up the good work

  36. NinTimdo says:

It makes me sad how people find it easier to be negative together. We at PE are awesome.
