The Metroid Prime Trilogy “Sucks” According to the Former lead of the Series

Current Batman Origins Blackgate developer, Mark Pacini, has stated in a recent interview that he feels the Metroid Prime games on the Gamecube and Wii suck.

Mark Pacini worked at Retro, and was the lead to all three Metroid Prime games. In 2008, he left Retro Studios and formed Armature Studio. He even hired some of the old Metroid Prime staff.

In an interview with Gameinformer, Pacini said he hopes he won’t let Metroid fans down with Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate, since the game will Metroid type experience.

“I hope we don’t disappoint them. That’s always my fear, because I think everything we do sucks,” he said.

“But that’s just me because I thought all the Prime games suck. At the end of the day all I see are all the bad things.

“Prime 2 was a blur to me. It was so quick, it was so fast. That thing just went out the door and it was a very divisive game. People either liked it or thought it sucked, and I can completely agree because I couldn’t tell you what that game was because it happened so quickly.

“Prime 1 was the best designed game. Prime 3 I feel is the most fun one to play. Prime 2 is divisive. You either like it or you don’t. That’s kind of the way I look at it.”

This brutal self analysis is not just relegated to the Metroid games. Paacini appears to be displeased with Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate

“In my gut I feel like, yeah, it’s going to be cool. I’m excited for it. But at the same time, I hope we don’t disappoint people and I hope that they like it. We’re trying our hardest. I would like to play a game like this, so hopefully everyone else will, too.”

Well, we’re always our own worst critics, and if Blackgate “sucks” the way Metroid Prime did, it’s probably going to make a lot of people pretty happy.

This guy is his own harshest critic. I disagree that the game suck, but I agree with his analysis of the three games.  What do you guys think?

I actually liked Corruption the best, but I liked the first Prime too. I really could never get into Echoes though.

I still think he might have left Nintendo to early. Retro helped out with Mario Kart 7 and they made Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii.

Working for Nintendo is more stable and is financially rewarding.

I think he is just hyping his new game as if he says this doesn't compare to our new games the prime series is epic this guy is meh……

I disagree with what he is saying, as I absolutely adored the Prime series….even considered buying the Trilogy on Wii when I was off at college even though my Wii was with my family….but I get where he is coming from.

Former Retro devs have talked about working for Nintendo and have said that it is hard and challenging work (in the good way, like challenging yourself to run farther or something). When your company is working on the game day in and day out, meticulously criticizing it so it is up to Nintendo's usual standards…..you will always see the flaws. There are actors that don't see the movie they are in simply because they are tired of working on it, same thing goes for game developers.

Really, it is a good thing that he thinks the games suck considering the near universal praise for them. It just means he will always be pushing to make the game better, it will never be a great game in his eyes, but everyone else gets the benefit.

I can imagine this is pretty common for Nintendo franchises considering the level of polish they have. They rarely have game breaking bugs, fps slowdowns, really weird bugs, shoddy hit detection or any number of the other problems that have plagued games from other developers. Even the "rushed" MP2 was a technically sound game, I enjoyed it quite a bit but not as much as the first one for some reason.

Damn that dude needs to Cheer up a bit. I mean, yeah there are times where we have those times self critique but its like destroying yourself. I never cared for the Prime series but they were good games.

I wouldn't say they suck. I like the older 2D ones the best, and for all the hate it gets, like Other M more (mostly because it reminds me more of a 3D version of the old ones). But I did like the Metroid Prime games quite a bit, and that's really saying something because I just don't like first person games. I would probably agree with what he said about them too, Prime 2 was my least favorite but still good, Prime was probably the best one, and Prime 3 was a lot of fun because the controls worked so well.
