Unseen64 says the Nintendo NX is not Aiming to Compete Against PS4 on a Power Level

nintendo-nx1-656x369

Unseen64’s Liam Robertson, has stated that Nintendo’s upcoming gaming device codenamed “NX”, will not be looking to compete with the PS4 on a “power level”.

When pressed about whether the NX is console or handheld, Tamaki would not reveal.

  • Ryuken13

Guessing at NX console specs is pointless at this time.. Did Robertson not read the announcement that Nintendo is being very quiet about the new console specs for competitive reasons??

The new system will be at a minimum as powerful as PS4 and probably a bit more powerful… The components will be cheaper since the PS4 is using already dated components and matching or beating dated components is not tough..

Console components are like PC components.. Cutting edge is about 4-6 months only but the components are sufficient for years in most cases..

  • Mythosa

That could mean it roasts the hell out of it lol
This just solidifies my thoughts more on a hybrid system. Home/portable/mobile console.

    regarding COUGH power

A 57 is more powerful than jaguar clock for coock core for core AMD have even stated this

nintendo will get a custom version like apple use custom versions

custom optermized arms are far more powerful than standard arm cores, apple iphone 6 dualcore keeps pace with 8 cores on off the shelf androids

nvideas custom dualcores beat 4core standard arm’s

nintendo will have a CUSTOM ARM WITH BIG CATCH MEMORY 4 to 8 cores or the new K12

portingfrom x86 to arm is a EVERYDAY THING NOW

This is foolishness, I doubt this guy has any real knowledge on how technology works. If this source is true which it is probably not, then he would clearly be going by numbers alone. I’ve said this many times and anyone who truly knows anything about technology knows this, power don’t mean shit in the world of computing, in fact it doesn’t exist. Power only exist to give the components current, and in that realm the less power you use the better, not the more. Its about speed and data throughput, how fast can I fetch information, execute it and then write it to memory using as little memory as possible, its the same logic for any computerised device, heck even cars work on a similar logic. All of that comes down to your system design, which is what Nintendo focus the most on when making a console, hence why their systems always perform well beyond its best numbers whereas the other two systems perform well below their base numbers. On paper the NX doesn’t even need to look as powerful as a PS4 just like how the Wii still didn’t look as powerful as an Xbox and same with the gamecube. Which in reality the Wii is just a refined version of a gamecube and look what it was capable of doing. The NX really only needs to be a refined and updated version of a WiiU to produce results well beyond anything the current consoles can do now.

    • GameTalk

The reason Wii sold more than the gamecube, wasn’t because the Wii was pretty much a refined version, or the specs of the hardware but for the motion controls wich were a novelty and the entrance price point was hard to beat comparing it the asking price of the PS3 at start.

They try to replicate that with the WiiU, but it didn’t came out as Planned

      • Micah Ma-at Maragh

I didn’t say anything about sales. Sales has nothing at all to do with my point. My point is about the technology and what it was capable of, and how system design will always be king when it comes to what a console can do, also as well good developers who know how to optimise. Sales was never mentioned.

    • Micah Ma-at Maragh

And just like I said it wasn’t true, these people talk a load of frafh

  • eaglebob345

I wish these guys, and other rumor/leak peddlers, would just keep quiet. If Nintendo wants some privacy, why can’t people respect that?

    • Jon Turner

Yes, exactly. Right now we should take this with a grain of salt.

  • Jon Turner

It would NOT be a good idea for Nintendo to make their next console underpowered. At all. It’s not working for WiiU.

That said, I do think that since this is just a rumor, it should be taken as such. I won’t believe anything about this until Nintendo themselves say what it is.

    • http://youtube.com/paidenthusiast paidenthusiast

      Precisely

  • Kirgo

There are some big questions coming up about this statement. Even if we acknowledge him having an insider source.

First of all, What kind of information did he get so that he knows how powerfull NX will be in the end? Does he simply know clockspeeds? If that is the case: There is no way to tell what it can do just by knowing that… Does he know the used architecture? That wouldn’t be enough either. Does he know both? It would still be hard at that point. It is even quite possible that the hardware specs aren’t completely final by now… So what kind of information could he even have that would make him know that the NX cannot compete on a power level? He even says he is “absolutely sure of that now”, but by what kind of information could he? Beside for it being a smartphone or something like that, then it would be quite obvious.

What does cannot compete even mean? The Wii U already is not THAT much weaker than a PS4 that you could say it is no competition at all. So if NX is stronger than Wii U it would imho automatically mean it can compete with the PS4, if it isn’t far stronger than that, of course. Apart from that it would mean NX is just as strong or weaker than the Wii U, which could mean that it isn’t a Wii U successor, but something different or that he doesn’t know what he is talking about of course.

I leave it at that for now and just say that I severely question his credibility at this point and even if he is correct, it might not mean much if it isn’t an actual Wii U successor.

wiiu is either a console that shares its games with smart devices asa home and mobile all included experience

a hybred handheld that docks for tv play

or a dual unit bundled together

it will bring together handhrld and console gaming

likely using a shrunk upgraded over clocked wiiu gpu and edram with a added custom high clockspeed ARM cpu nintendo-amd designed together

a gaming optermized arm like gekko was a custom powerpc before that became broadway then expresso

likely that nintendos future is ARM BASED and this allows them to embrace there own hardware and smart hardware

a 14nm or 20nm SYSTEM ON CHIP with wiiu gpu and new arm cpus

it could easy be wiiu plus ora scalable clock speed handheld and console hybred

    • android138

agreed i actually think it’s like an external pci unt that has a customized graphics card but with added features that can leverage the wii u or 3ds IMO. but who knows i cant wait for the reveal.

  • person

In of itself, power isn’t important. BUT, if it’s much weaker than the PS4, then it’ll have no 3rd party support, which’ll seriously limit it’s sales, which IS IMPORTANT.
Nintendo better have one hell of a gimmick/innovation on this thing, if this rumour’s correct.

    • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeqVK6IRhSAzMTVrInpg03Q Otaku DJK1NG

even it was it still wouldn’t because third parties will find other excuses why they wont support it like during the GC days when hardly any games were that big. aside from JRPG such as Tales of Symphonia.

      • person

True, but Nintendo needs to give 3rd parties NO EXCUSE. No cartridges, no weird mini DVDs, tech that’s similar to the competition, no gimmicks that are hard to program for. The thing Nintendo needs to understand, is that it’s not their consoles that they’ll be remembered for, it’s their games. I don’t give a Damn if I’m playing Mario/Metroid/Zelda with motion controls, with a gamepad, with a VR headset, just make the games good!
Honestly, if the NX turns out to be essentially a PS4, with amiibo functionality, an improved Wii U pro controller, great 1st party exclusives like Zelda, Metroid, Mario etc, (and a PROPER Animal Crossing game) at launch, it’ll quickly sell up to a point, based on these games, then convince 3rd parties that their games’ll sell, then it’ll sell more, then 3rd party support’ll improve, so it’ll sell more and the positive cycle will go on. If they used off the shelf parts like the PS4, the 2 year gap would allow Nintendo to either make it a bit more powerful than the PS4, OR sell it for $100/£60 cheaper. Say about, £280/$300….

Or Nintendo can make a slightly more powerful Wii U, it’s their choice, I guess.

        • Wegotexclusives

Even if nintendo made digital only console (wich is something third parties want) they would still get limmited support heck even microsoft has to pay for ports.

LOL MINI DISC THE INDUSTRY IS FULL OF SHIT

okay what if Nintendo doesnt give them any.

But they go blame Nintendo gamers for not buying their games?

          • person

If 3rd parties hypothetically release proper, non-gimped games (that are EXACTLY the same as the Xbox/PS games) on a Nintendo console and Nintendo fans don’t buy them, then we DESERVE to have S*** 3rd party support. I’d like to think that we’re not that stupid, though.

      • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

The GameCube had Madden, COD, and Need for Speed plus much more.

        • person

Exactly. People say: ‘Nintendo tried to woo third parties with the GameCube and that still got poor support!’. They don’t realise that the GameCube got the best 3rd party support since the SNES days. I’m sure that if the Gamecube played DVDs and looked less ‘kiddy’ (say, like the Wii!), it would have gotten much better support, and sold a lot more as well. Nintendo need to find a way to break the poor 3rd party support=poor sales=poor 3rd party support… cycle. Their 1st parties+3rd party partnerships strategy won’t work because they don’t make nearly enough partnerships, and they take too long to make games.

    For starters why does

Not competing against PS4 power means it all of the sudden weaker.

It could be trying to be a PC power console with a cheap price since ti will connect with PC, Wii U and 3DS.

  • ei8bit

on “power level”? Could be more powerful or less. we all know this in the year 2016 or 2017. let see

  • PrinceRPG .

he may be credible with cancelled games doesnt mean he knows what the NX is

  • FierceGauge82

NX is not aiming to compete against PS4 on a power level.

    ….And he’s probably right.

Nintendo are going to want to launch the NX at a price point of either
    $199.99 or $249.99. Period.

There is no way they are going to launch another $300 dollar console or
whatever this device turns out to be when they already have a console on
the market at that price point in the Wii U, even if the Wii U drops in
price by the time the NX releases.
And although Miyamoto is supposedly not involved w/ the hardware this time around and is more focused on software, he already expressed that the price point of the Wii U in $349.99 & $299.99 contributed to the console not gaining traction as the Wii U is after all, Nintendo’s most expensive console ever.

I feel the NX will end up at that sweet spot of $249.99, same price the Wii launched at. And I hope this hybrid-rumor that’s been going around for a while is exactly what this device turns out to be.

Games on the TV, Games on the GO > in ONE device. This way, Nintendo only have to focus their marketing on 1 device. And NX is obviously the code
name, but if Nintendo ends up naming this thing the Nintendo Fusion,
which some of the rumors have suggested & is a name I love by the way,
then the core concept combined w/ the name of the console itself would be
easily transferable to the mainstream, unlike the confusing proposition in
    the “Wii U”.

The Nintendo Fusion - a handheld and home console in one, and they just simply
demonstration how you can easily connect it to your HD TV to play games,
as well as easily disconnect it and take the device with you anywhere
at anytime. Plus, there is a few other NEW hooks in there somewhere as
    well that gamers will love.

The big question is whether or not the NX will be backwards compatible w/ Wii U games. But since Nintendo intends to keep the Wii U on the market & supposedly will continue to make games for it post-NX launch, then why would they make the NX backwards compatible in that regard, at least out of the gate?

Another huge plus is, if it does turn out to be a hybrid-system, we will get the Pokemon game we’ve always wanted because we’d be able to play a Pokemon RPG on the TV as well as on the go < as the the core concept of the device would suggest.

A new Pokemon RPG would actually be the perfect launch game, killer app if you will, to demonstrate the core concept of the NX if it is a hybrid-system. (but that would almost guarantee a holiday launch).
Pokemon in HD on the handheld is one thing, but the bonus of being able to
experience that same Pokemon RPG on the TV as well if you want to is the
    hook Nintendo needs, literally.
And then they just need a more core-focused franchise like a new Metroid right along side Pokemon at launch to sort of portray a Wii Sports/Twilight Princess-like scenario w/ a new 3D Mario or something on the horizon as well. And most definitely some surprising third-party content/collaborations. Of course this is just an example, but that mix right there would easily result in a successful launch. Big time.

Nintendo also should offer at least 1 franchise of theirs in the 'launch window' in my opinion that has been dormant for a very long time. Like a new Waverace or something that just truly catches us gamers/Nintendo fans off guard. Or…
Diddy Kong Racing 2??? So that way Nintendo leaves the impression right out
of the gate that they will be showing more love for their underutilized IP specifically FOR their new system, the NX, and within it's run.

    ^^^
This makes so much sense that if they don't go w/ something like this,
then it's truly going to be shocking, at least for me.

    • GameTalk

The Wii U.. Wasn’t a 350$ Machine.. Was a 200$ Machine with a 150$ Controler. If they make a 350 with a 50$ controller like the PS4 Is.. Then the VALUE and perception would have been different.

      Cheap will always be cheap

      • android138

good point, but i actually like the wii u controller. plus most seem to forget the nx console might not have been possible without first developing the gamepad integration into the system. and financialy since they have already made the investment into the tech and software. it will be cheaper and very cost effective for nintendo at this point.

  • JaxonH

Honestly, the gamers on the other side of the fence (who complain about not enough power) wouldn’t buy the system no matter how powerful it was anyways. They like western megabudget, and that doesn’t sell well on Nintendo. So it’s MIA. And it’ll be MIA next generation too, mark my words. Nintendo can make a console powerful enough to send a rocket into space but it still doesn’t change the fact that nobody buys those games on the platform, so nobody brings those games TO the platform.

Ultimately it’s going to be first party only and third-party partnerships from here on out. Basically what we see with Wii U- that’s how it’s going to stay. The positive is if Nintendo continues to ramp up production and fill in gaps, they might be able to create an entire ecosystem entirely independent of the rest of the industry, at least as far as diversity and regularity if releases go. The question is, will enough gamers support that? I will, and I’m sure every other Nintendo fan will too, but will anybody beyond the 10 million current Wii U owners support a platform entirely devoid of multiplats? I hope so, there’s so many gamers out there who are completely oblivious to anything beyond the scope of western megabudget titles. If some of them were to dip their toes in the water they would probably become fans for life.

    • android138

yea. but its funny nintendo was the only one to make a profit. third party’s are making out like bandits as sony and microsoft sink lower and lower in profit in their gaming divisions. do we really want to hand the industry over to money hungry developers because the ps4 and x one are pretty much a third party station and the x me too box. but hey this only my opinion.

  • Wanderlei

Handheld confirmed, I thought it all along.

  • fitmclaren

The NX is getting too much buzz right now. Since E3 started(and even before E3), the only thing that a lot of people are focusing on is the NX, and completely ignoring the Wii U and 3DS games that are coming out this year and the next. I don’t understand this. Satoru Iwata has said on multiple occasions that Nintendo will give new information about the NX in 2016, so why can’t people wait until then? I much rather hear from Nintendo themselves about THEIR next system than a random insider. We need to just wait and enjoy the games that we have now.

    • GameTalk

Actually, Nintendo Is the one to Blame flor that. They should have keep their mouths shut after the DeNA Deal. They even still the shine on the E3 by Mentioning it. After the E3 Fiasco, because, that’s what It was.. They haven’t stop talking about the system they aren’t supposed to talk about.

      • abINC4l

They couldn’t have helped it because something like that would’ve been leaked to the media either way and it would’ve looked even more suspicious on Nintendo’s part if they didn’t acknowledge the deal right away.

      • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeqVK6IRhSAzMTVrInpg03Q Otaku DJK1NG

what would rather Nintendo stealth release their mobile game this Fall and say nothing about the NX til next year.

      • sharlo galmo

Noooo it is the media you better can blame, cause if Nintendo don’t say something about the NX, and about mobile, the media is gonna say Nintendo is gone Mobile. That’s why Nintendo talked about the NX.

      • Travis Touchdown

        “Let’s blame Nintendo!”

Yeah, no. You know perfectly well why they announced the console was in development this early, and that was to assure enthusiasts that Nintendo wasn’t abandoning traditional hardware.

The problem is entirely due to people having to treat everything Nintendo does as wrong.

        • GameTalk

I’m not talking about the first time they announced the NX console during the time of the DeNA deal.. I’m talking about the many other times the have talk about the NX, Incluiding the E3 itself, and steal WiiU’s moment.

1st reveal.. Ok to ensure clients and followers that they will continue to be in the Hardware Bussiness.

All other 30th times Nintendo have talked about the NX.. Have been a Bad move from a Wii U point of view.

If I were a new possible customer, hearing so many things about a new hardware coming, from the maker itself.. I’ll definetly stay away from the actual system on store and wait for the new release just to get more bang for my bucks

    • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeqVK6IRhSAzMTVrInpg03Q Otaku DJK1NG

like said before talking about NX is doing more hurt to Wii U than Nintendo

  • Travis Touchdown

And how does this conflict with what we already knew? Namely, the fact that NX isn’t a home console?

  • abINC4l

I highly doubt it, the PS4 doesn’t cost much more than a Wii U to build and that was like 2 years ago and that’s taking into account the other features Sony loves to add in that Nintendo doesn’t. The NX doesn’t have to be significantly more powerful, but I would say at least twice as powerful as a PS4 would suffice for 3rd parties and MORE than sufficient for Nintendo and I’m just talking about the GPU and CPU. As for memory/RAM, I think just matching the PS4’s 8GB of DDR5 RAM would be fine.

  • awang0718

If NX is a home console and it is weaker than Xbox One and PS4, then good luck, because Nintendo and the NX will need it.

That means it’s far more or less powerful. Both would be bad. If it’s too powerful the cost will be too high. I think it should be slightly above PS4, maybe 10 to 20%.

      • FalconLawnch

You can interpret the statement however you want, but it really doesn’t sound like it’s more powerful. Especially since Nintendo hasn’t been far ahead of the technological curve since the N64.

      • sharlo galmo

I think it will be indeed more powerful, cause making a console on PS4 level, is cheap right now. I also think they gonna sell it for 250, just like the WiiU….

  • *NormalGamer*

As usual, I will treat this as ‘speculation’ until the NX is revealed in 2016 as Iwata stated before; and even if the NX ‘does’ or ‘does not’ turn out to not be as powerful than the PS4 (which I could care less anyway), well made good games will ‘always’ come first in the end.

I don’t Understand why Nintendo Is so opposed to compete with their rivals. They might not need the power console to make great games, but 3rd party do, so give It to Them.

Make a Fricking Steam Machine with 1st party and get the Crown.

    • Jewelwriter Moonstar

Yea…and we’ll have third parties having everyone be the same.

      • GameTalk

At the same time, Why It has to be SO different? Be different with your 1st party.. with gameplay, accsesories, unique IPs, etc.. So much they can do to differenciate from competition without been a complete alien.

        • Jewelwriter Moonstar

Do you honestly believe that they’ll even be fair about what they do? So far I barely saw many of them doing right to customers. Even so called independent ones (Bloodstain) are getting fishy.

    • D.M.T

Because Nintendo has never competed with their rivals directly. It’s not because they can’t but because they’re not interested in stealing fans from Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo just wants to make money and make an impact in the gaming industry. Nothing more, nothing less.

      • GameTalk

If Nintendo it’s not interested in stealing fans from other companies, then why do they care with install base numbers? Keep supporting the Wii U since A) You are making money with that hardware and B) they impacted the gaming industry with the idea of asymetrical gaming.

The truth is they didn’t like having a machine that hasn’t sell 10MM yet. The reasons? To high starting price? Wrong name? Or gaming droughts? I Truly think it’s because of the droughts, I’m ok/happy with my Wii U, but I Wish I didn’t had to pick up a second console, to play the MANY other games out there.

      • PrinceRPG .

if they dint atleast get other new fans to buy there console the nx will only sell 10 million like the wiiu

    • Micah Ma-at Maragh

They don’t need to compete, they are not in the same market space, Nintendo actually has a monopoly on its own market, as well as the handheld gaming market. Look at the few people that have a WiiU compared to ps4 and xbox one, yet it makes a hell of a lot more profit for Nintendo with much higher first party game sales. The Crown is a joke, no one is competing for games they are competing for the illusion of power which is image. Who looks the best, in these day and times what looks the best isn’t necessarily the best, for example I have worked in Catering and I currently do Refuse Loading (binman). Catering looks nicers on the surface, you go to nice places, top events, where tie, shirt, trousers, sometimes wastecoat, see celebs perform and shit but you get paid shit and treated like shit and you get worked to death and have to always answer to people telling you what to do. It all looks good on the surface cos of the image. Binman usually has a negative image, yet I get paid much more, get better hours, don’t have to maintain an image for anyone, can where what I look and my lunch and travel cost are covered and all I have to do is load bins onto a truck and the people are a lot nicer. Illusion vs experience, Nintendo is not competing for image, they are selling the experience you cannot get anywhere else, they don’t tell you its powers, you experience the power for yourself, they don’t tell you how nice the graphics are, they let you experience that for yourself, the main thing they sell to you is the gameplay cos without the gameplay you don’t have the experience no matter how good it looks or how powerful the system it is on. Nintendo will make their system to suit their games, cos they understand how the business works. And in terms of performance per watt, the WiiU is actually the most powerful system out of the PS4 and Xbox One

Another tabloid bull***t brought to you in part by Unseen64.

Exactly. This is the same asshole that said that a new Metroid was in development for the Wii U and that it would be released in 2016 which will be hard to believe since Metroid Prime: Federation Force is being released in that same year. I’m not believing a damn thing until Nintendo gives us the heads up on what’s going on. I’m sorry, I’m just not buying this rumor but if it ends up being true then Nintendo’s 3rd party woes will continue and I’m really hoping that’s not the case

      • Wanderlei

Well that blows his creditability out the water..

            LOL…I’m down

  • Me

I hope this isn’t true. If it is, then I’m expecting Wii U 2.0.

  • Kyle Maziuk

Reggie has implied that it is a home console AT LEAST (http://tinyurl.com/prqtldk), though for Nintendo’s sake I hope this guy is wrong.

I feel as though if he were correct, the 3rd Party response to Nintendo talking to them about the NX during E3 probably would not have been nearly as positive, if at all. If the NX is still much weaker than the PS4, then that means that ports will still be time and money consuming, much like they are now on the Wii U, which is why we barely have any 3rd Party support left.

    • D.M.T

Time and money consuming? Making games for Wii U is or should be cheaper than making games for PS4/XBO because it’s weaker. If 3rd parties were smart, they would make some of their games for Wii U first and then port it over to more powerful consoles. But we all know that 3rd party publishers are dumb as fuck when it comes to Nintendo and its fans.

      • person

Cheaper, if made from the ground up, yes. But they’d have to make 2 versions in tandem to work on the Wii U. Sure, the Wii U version will be cheaper, but it’s still adding 30-50% onto the cost.

        • Kyle Maziuk

Exactly! Porting between the XBO and PS4 is easy because of how similar they are in power, but the downscaling that is required for porting from those systems to the Wii U is what turns the 3rd Parties away.

          • person

Well, let’s hope the NX is a decent powered, reasonably prices console with no unnecessary gimmicks and decent 3rd party support…not holding my breath. Still, the worst that can happen if Nintendo continue their: gimmick, game droughts, party games strategy is that I’ll save about £200, because there’s no way I’m buying another Wii/Wii U type console, unless it has many immensely good first party games. If it only has Metroid Amiibo party, MK9, SSB for NX, New Super Mario Bros NX and Super Mario 3D World NX, then I’ll just stick to my PS4.

    • FalconLawnch

Or it could mean third parties could easily port more fully-featured versions of their mobile games to NX. Based on some of the rumors, it seems like the console version of the NX may have more in common with the Nvidia Shield console or the Amazon FireTV than the PS4 and Xbox One.
