Will you be Satisfied with 30 Frames per Second on the PS4 & Xbox 720?

A rumored leak of the PlayStation 4  dev kits lead many to believe Sony would be targeting 1080p 60 FPS in 3D gameplay for the PS4. However, in that same leak the supposed specs didn’t quite match up to that quality. While 1080p 60 FPS could still be possibility, more information has come from id Software Developer John Carmack saying that most games will still be at 30FPS next generation, “Unfortunately, I can pretty much guarantee that a lot of next-gen games will still target 30 fps.” If John Carmack says it, I believe him. Plus, he’s one of the few developers that actually made 60 FPS happen this generation with RAGE and Doom 3 BFG Edition. We want to know what the gamers want? 30 FPS with better graphics, or 60 FPS with lower quality graphics? Please put your comments below.

60 Frames per Second Would be a Welcomed Edition to any game

60FPS is a vital component to many games. Consoles have struggled to reach that benchmark though. Fighting games like Tekken and Soul Caliber will probably still be at 60 FPS next generation, but shooting games other than Call of Duty will probably opt for 30FPS like Carmack said. I would love to play Halo 5 in 60 FPS, but I don’t think that going to happen. Whats going to be interesting though is seeing where Nintendo’s first party games land. I think it would be a huge blow to Nintendo’s franchises if they ran at anything below 60 FPS. Smash Bros, Zelda, and Metroid all need to run at a blistering frame rate and have stunning graphics. Sony managed to get the God of War games on the PS2 running at 60 FPS on the PS3, but God of War 3 was locked at 30FPS. For God of War 4, Sony should really try to get that game running at 60 FPS. If there is one problem I have with God of War, is that it runs slower than other action games like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry 4, and Ninja Gaiden. God of War 3’s graphics are already really good. God of War 4 can just have a modest bump in graphics and run in 60 FPS, it will be a better game that way.

The Graphics need to be as good as Consumers can Afford

Graphics are starting to progress faster than the console companies budgets can keep up with. Last generation saw two HD consoles priced at $599.99 and $399.99 respecitvely. I don’t know why Sony released a console so expensive, but it really came back to bite them in the ass. It took Sony a while to recover from the initial launch. Even the Xbox 360 needed a few price cuts to pick up its sales. Today’s market is vastly different from the markets of 2005 and 2006. Sony and Microsoft need to be very careful with the pricing of the PS4 and Xbox 720 next generation, or they will see consumers money go elsewhere till the prices come down. Although I’m upset were going to see the same 30 FPS next generation, I’m hopeful some developers will opt to get their games running at 60 FPS. Rage was refreshing to play on the Xbox 360 because it ran at 60 FPS yet had good visuals.

What do you guys think about the whole 30 FPS vs 60 FPS debate? Which do you prefer? 30 FPS with better graphics or 60 FPS with faster gameplay? Please put your comments below.

P.S. I know PC gamers are laughing at this whole discussion. But it still needs to be had.

I will absolutely not buy any new consoles if they run at 30FPS. That would not be acceptable at all. I would.. just go back to PC

They really need to get to 120 FPS, I think 60 is a bit slow, but the best they can do at the moment.

    • Furious Francis

120 FPS!? I didn\’t even know games can run that fast. The human eye really can\’t keep up with over 60 FPS. But if your looking for speeds that fast, PC is your best bet.

      • Defected

I only game at 120 FPS and trust me when I say this – Everything looks sharper and more fluent on the eyes and brain . Light becomes more apparent allowing you to feel relaxed at 120 FPS .

    30fps locked works great!

    • Furious Francis

Yeah it works, but 60 is so much better.

  • Gamer

FYI God of War3 was never locked at 30fps, God of War franchise has always been a franchise to push towards 60fps, God of War infact ran between 45-56fps. Please get your information right!

    • Furious Francis

Did it? Which one? God of War 3 on the PS3 ran at 30 FPS if im not correct. I knew the PS2 ones were above 30 but not at 60.

    • Furious Francis

Ok, i found a article that says the game is 30 FPS,

  • John

Couldn't care less about the next overhype and underdeliver PlayStation console. But if the next generation targets 30fps, then so be it. But I agree, fighters and fast action games need more, unless it is truly locked Vsync 30fps without ANY framedrops. I've seen most multiplats go Under 20fps on the PS3 this gen and I am truly fed up.

    • Furious Francis

Yeah I understand where your coming from. I was playing Assassin\’s Creed 3 the other day and the frame rate dipped below 30 FPS a lot. I\’m not going to put with this crap for much longer

  • tkk

yes yes yes. a solid locked 30 fps is enough. i would rather the devs spend the power on character model, lighting, AI, physics and of couse environmental details more than fucking irrelevant higher framerates.

    • Furious Francis

I think it depends on the game. Fighting and action games need 60 FPS. Shooting games might not. But the most popular shooting game (Call of Duty) runs at 60 FPS and the fans of the series want nothing less.

  • Littlebear

What's all the fuss about 60FPS? If it can't run at 60, lower it down to 50 or 40FPS.

    • Furious Francis

Some people like to have that smooth frame rate. Fighting and action games depend on that smooth frame rate for timing. Its also important in sports games. Madden plays like crap in 30 FPS

  • Mukkinese

Rage looked great, but I and no doubt most gamers did not notice the high frame rate. A drop below 30 during a game might be noticeable, sometimes, but this issue is more of a game-journos concern I think. As are top of the range graphics. Nintendo's franchises do not need 60FPS at all, they will sell and sell as long as the frame rate does not noticeably stutter. After the Zelda demo we are expecting amazing graphics, but that does not mean the kind of thing that only top-end P.C.s can run.
