One would figure with the Wii U Gamepad and HD system, Miyamoto and staff would have taken Super Mario Bros. in a new direction, but that did not happen. However, Miyamoto now says that it is time to take Super Mario Bros. in a new direction in an interview with TIME:
“Doing this now at the 30th anniversary [of Super Mario Bros.] is really putting some more of that creativity into the players. But at the same time, we as the developers feel that it’s time for us to move in a new direction, and we’re preparing to work on the future of Super Mario from here on.”

Star Fox Zero will have amiibo Support Surprise, Miyamoto Discusses Successors
Nintendo games boss Shigeru Miyamoto, discussed how Star Fox Zero will have some surprises with amiibo. Miyamoto also discussed the future of Nintendo titles.
WSJ: Will there be amiibo for “Star Fox Zero”?
Miyamoto: There will be one new amiibo, the character Falco. He’s part of the “Super Smash Bros.” line but also a “Star Fox” character. You’ll get something — it’s a surprise.
WSJ: Is there a successor ready to take over your work when you retire?
Miyamoto: I have many. In the past, I would often have ideas for games that I would want to create and I would tell the different teams that work for me to make the games. I’ve been working with my teams for a long time. “Splatoon” is an example—the idea came from the youngerr members of that team. At the senior level, we supported them. So that’s how we are transitioning.

Nintendo Recognizes they let down a Number of E3 Viewers this year, will Work to Improve Next Year’s E3
Nintendo has discussed their E3 2015 showing, and acknowledged the disappointment from fans. In the latest meeting with shareholders, Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto have elaborated on the topic.
Star Fox Zero is not far from a VR Experience, says Miyamoto
Star Fox Zero producer Shigeru Miyamoto, has stated that his title is not far off a virtual reality experience, as you use the second screen on the GamePad.
“Thanks to the motion sensor and the second screen on the GamePad, Star Fox Zero is not so far from a VR experience,” said Miyamoto. “Nintendo’s principle was and is always to make games that people play together in front of the TV. I think Star Fox Zero is that. [But] if we someday do experiments in VR, there is the Star Fox brand [we could consider implementing].”

Star Fox Zero - Miyamoto on Mastering the Controls
German outlet Spiegel Online talked to Star Fox Zero producer Shigeru Miyamoto about mastering the game’s controls in a recent interview.
Spiegel Online: The controls of “Star Fox Zero” are due to the two screens a challenge.
Miyamoto: Compared to other games, it is a bit complex. There are many ways how video games entertain the player. One of it is the process understanding how a game works - another the process to master the controls. With mastering the controls you improve, which results in having fun. Out intention was not that players suggest: “There are two screens, that is making it complicated” Instead: “There are two screens, I can do different things on them.”
Spiegel Online: How long does it take to get into the game?
Miyamoto: It is hard to understand the basics, if you just try Star Fox Zero for a few minutes at like a games expo. Anyhow, if people buy the game and play it at home, after one or two days, they will reach the point where they understand how it works, how to master it - that is the moment the fun begins.

Miyamoto is not Actively Making Decisions with the Nintendo NX’s Hardware
Shigeru Miyamoto played a big hand in the hardware development of the Wii and Wii U. But it seems like he will won’t be playing a hand in developing the specs for the Nintendo NX. In an interview with Fortune, Miyamoto said he has “pulled himself back out of some of the hardware section.” And is “really focused on some of the software”, like StarFox for Wii U.
“I’ve pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I’m really focused on some of the software that I’m involved in—for example, the new Starfoxgame,” he says. “Of course I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions.”

VR Doesn’t fit with Nintendo’s Living Room Philosophy, says Miyamoto
Nintendo games boss Shigeru Miyamoto says that Virtual Reality doesn’t fit with Nintendo’s approach to living room entertainment.
“The current types of virtual reality aren’t really a good fit for Nintendo’s philosophy of trying to create entertainment that people can play together in the living room. We’re constantly looking at different technology and experimenting with different elements of it, but we’re not feeling virtual reality is currently in a place where it’s ready to be released - as a product that fits with our philosophy of fitting in the living room.
We’re here at E3 this year to really focus on the games that are launching within the next year or so. We’re not showing off or showcasing anything that’s further down the road, and that’s why you don’t see us here with any samples of potential virtual reality type experiences.”

Amiibo won’t lock Content away in Star Fox Zero, says Miyamoto
Star Fox Zero will have amiibo support on Wii U, but Shigeru Miyamoto isn’t planning on locking away meaningful content with them.
“In terms of being able to unlock content, I don’t really want to go down that path. For this game, I think of it more as, for people who have the Amiibo, they’re going to get a little something extra and that’s how I’m planning on it with this game. So rather than actual abilities or things like that changing in the game, it would be like getting a different skin for the Arwing or something like that.”
“So, I don’t really want to talk about Nintendo in general today, but in terms of what I’m doing with Star Fox, I’m really not thinking about there being locked content or there being a mode that you won’t be able to play if you don’t have one. Since we already have the existing Smash Bros.
Amiibos I basically want to put in something so if you already have those Amiibos, I imagine people will try and tap them on Star Fox anyway, and I want to make sure there is something that gives them a nice charge when they do that.”

Shigeru Miyamoto Details why Wii U Failed, Hoping for a “big hit” with NX
The Wii U has not sold up to Nintendo’s expectations three years into its lifespan. One of the main figures in designing the Wii U, Shigeru Miyamoto, has detailed why the system failed, in addition to saying they are hoping for a “big hit” with the Nintendo NX.
“I think unfortunately what ended up happening was that tablets themselves appeared in the marketplace and evolved very, very rapidly, and unfortunately the Wii system launched at a time where the uniqueness of those features were perhaps not as strong as they were when we had first begun developing them.
“So what I think is unique about Nintendo is we’re constantly trying to do unique and different things. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they’re not as big of a hit as we would like to hope.”
Miyamoto continued on saying the company is already hard at work on their next system, codenamed NX, which will get a reveal in 2016.
“After Wii U, we’re hoping that next time it will be a very big hit.”
Reggie Fils-Aime and Metroid Prime producer Kensuke Tanabe have already stated the NX is a home console.
