LOL where were all these Sony fanboys when the Dreamcast was alive? None gave a shit about it then and all this fake nostalgia is pathetic and based on them simply having nothing better now than Dreamcast games.

    • Mythosa

It confuses me a bit too. Considering these games did not sell well at all, the fact that they raised enough money is almost baffling. I wonder how many have actually played the originals and if they know what they are actually getting. Of course there is a fan base for it, and they would jump at it without question, but I still wonder if it will sell well at all when it is eventually released.
They are games I always wanted to play, but I didn’t have a Dreamcast to be able to. I got to see a buddy play it for a little bit but it was new and fresh at the time. These kinds of games have been done a bunch now and I don’t think this is going to have the impact that many think it will. I do wish the best for it though.

Totally agree. Just wanted to mention -> they didnt raise “enough” money. Those 2millions were just a bad pr stunt. This game with todays standards will cost 100+millions. If Sony aims for less (around 25-50 millions), we might get a lot of dissapointed fans…but Sonys PR crew is so good, that they might sell the lack of content, depth or size as a “nostalgia tribute” :)

A few things point out. We don’t know where all these Dreamcast owners that supported Shenmue jumped to after the DC died. This game is funded for PC and PS4 too. I’d imgaine that most PS4 owners had a DC and that’s why they’re funding it. I thought Shenmue was unimpressive in 2001 and it’s just as lame in 2015. That doesn’t mean others feel the same way.

      • Wanderlei

The point is there were so FEW Dreamcast owners back then that its literally impossible for ps4 owners funding it be DC owners back then.
Same thing then as now, the DC had the far superior library of games while the ps2 had jackshit for its first two years. Yet people bought Sony’s lies and bullshit cgi videos and got the ps2 instead of the Dreamcast. “ps2 would have Toy Story 2 level graphics” ROFL! History repeats again and Sony keep getting away because they prey on a fanbase of morons.

        • Mega Prime

SEGA pissed away its fanbase via their own incompetence. You might think that the DC had a large library of games, but that’s just not true. Please don’t revise history because you liked SEGA better or have a grudge against SONY. While I personally didn’t own a DC, my roommate owned a console and I was following why SEGA couldn’t get games for the console. By games, I mean new and wide variety games and not a paltry line of exclusives. SEGA burned themselves rushing out the CD-ROM and 32X for the Genesis and when that failed to slow down Nintendo, they launched the Saturn only for Sony to clean their clock with the PS1. So SEGA rushed out another crappy console… low and behold the gamers and 3rd parties caught on and ignored the DC. I remember launghing at all my stupid friends who purchased a DC that I knew was going to die from the moment it released. You can’t lose the trust of your fanbase and expect to remain in business. I don’t care how much better the DC was over the those other rushed and failed concepts, the damage was done and any defending of SEGA will confirm my suspicions about your biases.

Actually this is not always connected. Yes, the original series was a commercial flop, but this doesnt mean that in the future it will happen again. Over the years the fanbase might have grown. It’s not the first time in media that a concept was overlooked when it first released and over the years became bigger (Blade Runner comes to mind -> now a classic with tons of fans, but when it came out a big flop!).

But you are correct, that there might be a big riks still. Not always is the loudest group of people also the biggest…actually most of the time its a small but very vocal group :) I would also not be suprised to see Bayonetta 2 like sales. Again, a game that everybody was wanting, but when released not many fans bought :)

The biggest challenge for Shenmue 3 will be the high hopes games have. Back then it was such a fresh idea, but with games like GTA, Yakuzza or Saints Row the concept of an open world just got so much crazier. I am not sure Shenmue 3 can compete with that, without a huge budget and long developement time.

  • Blackgold

Shenmue 3 will cost more than the 4 or so million that is being kickstarted. It’s clear Sony is paying the rest of the bill, but I find it stupid that they aren’t bankrolling it outright.

    • Mythosa

Think it’s hype and testing the waters really.

  • Ryuken13

Really simple: Sony wanted to see exactly what customer interest was in a 14-15 year old IP. The Kickstarter provides both advertising and gauges market interest.

Simply a safer bet than just throwing millions at old IP without checking the market first. Polls and petitions are next to useless since they don’t guarantee sales. Money talks and BS walks lol.

Sony is one of those polarizing companies that no matter what the do the gaming internet community is going to bitch and armchair quarterback every decision they make.

One must consider Sony also has ethical responsibilities towards their shareholders and employees. The Shenmue kickstarter was a great way to advertise and make sure the money was worth spending on the IP..

I’m glad I wasn’t the only person to come to this conclusion. Titangamecube and that guadeagon(sp) person seemed to think I was supporting fraud for thinking this was brilliant. It’s great to see someone else knows how to be objective. Maybe you could teach Titan, he gave me a headache.

      • Ryuken13

Titan is a great guy bro. A couple of passionate people enjoy this forum.. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we don’t.. Best thing about Playeressence is the forum is usually civil about differences in opinion.

        • Mega Prime

Well Titan made a bad first impression so I hope you’re right. I also have Matthew Wesley telling me to expand my ‘verbal lexicon’. Classy… to say the least. Arrogance is a real pet peeve of mine.

          • Jon Turner

Better beware alex9268 as well. He CAN get VERY touchy.

          • Ryuken13

People can talk some smack here.. In their defense, it is less smack talk than an other gaming forum I know of..

I have had heated debates with both guys but they do support their POVs well. Matthew and I disagree frequently but I like his POV from his perspective.

Honestly, if you have issues with arrogance or sarcasm you will be getting pissed off a lot on gaming forums. I just learned to agree to disagree lol.

          • Mega Prime

It helps to have people to vent to about though too.

          • Ryuken13

If you escalate they will escalate. Crush your foes with the quality of your prose and the strength of your reasoned arguments..

I honestly use the forums for just socializing a bit and some quality writing practice daily.

          • Mythosa

Hey I meant to reply to you but accidentally replied to Ryuken, read above.

They aren’t bad guys at all. I think some are just on edge after E3.

          • Mega Prime

Ya E3 was disappointing to say the least.

        • Mythosa

Yeah, he is, or was or whatever. He seems to have something seriously shoved way up his rectum right now though lol.
I can’t seem to say anything to him or anyone without him attempting to attack me. I shouldn’t but I actually find it kind of funny. All this machismo and ego from behind a keyboard. Goodness, blows my damn mind.
Matthew is a good guy as well. He can be a bit condescending if he doesn’t like what you say and then the vocabulary joins the party lol. He has some really interesting points of view though.
Some people have just been on edge after E3 I think.

Edit: yeah that was meant for Prime. Oh well lol.

          • Mega Prime

It’s all good. One of the problems deleted his account so that’s a start. I’m not concerned about poindexter either. If he wants to be a human dictionary of archaic words, that’s fine. I don’t think E3 was good for any gamers no matter where you play. This was definitely the worst Sony and Nintendo showings in years. Microsoft impressed some people, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. The so called backward capabilities got more press than anything else. It’s like people saying FFVII won E3 for Sony. If true, it’s beyond pathetic.

          • Ryuken13

E3 brings out the worst in people unfortunately and a lot of us vent our stress from our personal lives on the forum. I can’t judge I have done it myself..

For the ones going true “keyboard cowboy” maybe they need a break from the forum or an alternate way to vent stress.. Working out so much I am too tired to be pissed off at anyone lol.
