I just got this game today. I’ve never played a smash before. I’m not really sure what to do :-/

Whoa. That makes you and NormalGamer. Well anyway, to get started, you should experiment with the whole roster and see which character feels most comfortable. Mario is generally a good guy to start with as his moves come out quick so he can cover for your mistakes. Then you should go against underleveled CPUs. The great thing about Smash is that every character shares the same button control setup so it’s easy to learn how to use more than one character.

Ok. But what mode should I be playing? (and thanks)

There are two modes that are great for beginners:

          Smash Mode and Training

Smash Mode is basically the VS mode where you can Timed or Stock (lives) matches against players or CPUs. Training is in the Solo section and lets you test characters out against a CPU that you can manipulate to your need.
