Actually surprised it sold well considering the “gamers” and their bitching about this game.

Great sales for a great new franchise. I hope for a NX sequel with a longer single player game to accompany it.

  • Kidking17

This is a pleasant surprise, they got another winner in their hands.

  • WSJ4L

Great to hear. And for anyone looking or a quick laugh…

A wonderful little case study of how the advent of the free and open Internet and its constant bombardment of the masses with mindless media has warped the least responsible. The wonder of technology has spoiled some of us by enabling a deluded, blissfully ignorant existence. So much “analysis”, so many buzzwords, all worth jack shit.

    • SilverNight

All the pessimism and hate is what is wrong with people. It’s like people don’t want to have fun anymore.

    • Macreen Smith

      It’s not there anymore.

        The link’s still active.

When I click on it, it says “File Not Found”

          • WSJ4L

Interesting… Just out of curiosity, have you been to an opticians lately?

          • Macreen Smith

            …Yes.

          • Blake Wigert

            It is down

          • WSJ4L

            It still works for me…

          • Blake Wigert

Well that’s great for you, the rest of us can’t see what’s supposed to be a quick laugh

          • WSJ4L

Do you know what this means? It means I clearly have a gift. I KNEW I was special. You should all respect me more from now on.

When you got your article posted onto 4chan. You know you’re going somewhere kid? 😉 http://boards.4chan.org/v/thread/299910942/confirmed-million-seller

  • Guidosaur

Pretty sweet. Still waiting on the August update before I buy it.

I’ll pick it up shortly. Just like I’ve been saying every week since launch.

Goodness, I’ve become such an expert procrastinator that I procrastinate the procrastination.

    • Blake Wigert

Whenever you get around to getting it, you won’t be disappointed

  • Wanderlei

They really deserve it, great game.

  • awang0718

Here is the sales breakdown (retail + digital):

    Americas: 476,000 copies
    Japan: 368,000 copies
    Europe: 230,000 copies
Australia and New Zealand: 20,000 copies

Splatoon has actually sold around 1.1 million copies. Impressive, and likely ranks among the top 5-6 fastest selling Wii U games.

Also, based on last month’s NPD data, Splatoon has sold about 340,000 copies in June so far. Performing similar to what Mario Kart 8 sold in June 2014.

Not bad for a kiddy game with no voicechat.

    • Jewelwriter Moonstar

Is enough french fries about? I need them to catch all the salt and go with my victory burger.

  • RicardJulianti

I’d say that’s an overwhelmingly positive response.

Kudos if you get the reference 😀

  • Jon Turner

    Good news.

  • FalconLawnch

    Well deserved.

  • TheMagnum924

    So much for that boycott

    • Blake Wigert

Anyone who boycotted Splatoon over lack of voice chat is an idiot. ‘I’m gonna deny myself a great game, that’ll show them.’ Voice chat is largely only used in a negative way anyhoo, cursing, screaming, etc

      • Andrew Mitchell

Plus, we can see what the other players doing and wanting us to do on the gamepad! So there really wouldn’t have been much of a point to include it in this game. Maybe Nintendo will in a future installment, but who knows.

        • Blake Wigert

Exactly, you can see where ink is needed, where your teammates are, where the enemy is (either with Echolocation or just where their ink is being spread, all this in real time. It is actually pretty amazing that the game can do that. As I said in my original comment, voice chat, for me at least is unecessary, for any game. It is supposed to be used constructively, planning attacks/defense, etc, but it is overwhelmingly used to spread curses, screaming, hate, both racial and otherwise, and just isn’t worth having. No one wants to hear what a 12 year old kid did to your mother last night.

  • ChariotMan7

Congrats to them. In spit of all the negative that happen last week. Great news came out of their game Splatoon.

  • Ryuken13

Nintendo games usually sell pretty well if you consider their ROI to break even is usually a lot lower than their competition..

    • Matthew Wesley

It’s a budget title- even by Nintendo standards… the game probably paid for itself the first week it sold out in Japan. Everything else above that number is gravy.

      • Ryuken13

In other words, A smart IP that cost little and made a lot.. Works for me!

        • Matthew Wesley

I’m doing a video breaking it down… It will be up later today.

  • Hardin Twentyfive

1 million Squidkids in less than a month… Fabulous… We’re going to expand our Inkpire across the world, and then, the galaxy…
    Without Voice Chat.
    Stay fresh,

    • Andyjoe522

We’ll just communicate with hand-drawn Spongebob references. :p

  • uPadWatcher

Congrats to Nintendo! One million copies sold worldwide… I really want to get Splatoon!

  • Emufred

Nintendo tapping into the shooting genre like it’s nothing

    • Mythosa

I would love to see them tap into the Action-Adventure genre (Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Indiana Jones) as well. I have been seriously missing that genre.

      • Gearchin

They technically do have action adventure games, TOLZ ,Metroid can be considered in that genre, Xenoblade can be as well but has Jrpg elements.

        • Mythosa

I’ll give you LOZ, but the rest, not so much.
Plus I gave examples of the kind of game I was talking about.

          • Gearchin

oh i know, but the genre are so overarching in todays industry that many games can fit into different genres. i.e Dark souls rpg/action/adventure. AC open world/action adventure/exploration. The genres are so wide ranging anything can have different genres, Metroid 2d/3d platforming/action/adventure/shooter/exploration. Xenoblade, mmosh open world exploration/adventure/action/jrpg, Ark :survival evolved(pc game) adventure/exploration/survival,

Sorry for the wall of text but those are examples of the vast array of genres for games in the newer generation. What we knew as specific genres growing up are just so different now.

          • Gearchin

also im not trying to start anything, just voicing that genres and identification of them have changed so much, in this gaming landscape. but i agree would be awesome to have more Action adventure games man!

          • Mythosa

Don’t worry. I wasn’t taking it that way at all.
I do agree though. Genres are really starting to blur. Well not really starting, has been for a while.

      • Gearchin

They technically do have action adventure games, TOLZ ,Metroid can be considered in that genre, Xenoblade can be as well but has Jrpg elements.

  • Mythosa

Well deserved. I think this will continue to sell well too. I think it has staying power plus the consistent releases of more weapons and maps should encourage more to purchase as well.

  • The Best Bully

Nice to see a new IP sell good.

  • CapableTie

Well deserving besides a few small problems, I find the game to be so refreshing and fun compared to any other shooter. I liked Battlefield 4 and Titanfall, but this game is so much more clever and bold, with a surprising amount of depth and strategy, plus the customization is nice.

  • Santiago3:16

Nice! Now if only W101, Project STEAM and Bayonetta 2 had the same success,oh well.

    • Mythosa

      True.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Bayonetta 2 will get there. Steam and Wonderful 101 just aren’t as good as Splatoon or Bayonetta 2.

      • Mythosa

Bah! I’ll take W101 over Bayo any day.

        • Wonder Dean

I love W101 (the name is a hint) but even I have to admit that Bayo is just a better made game. Still deserved better sales though.

          • Matthew Wesley

The argument is subjective. Some people may love Bayonetta 2 but not like W101, others may like W101 and not like Bayonetta 2. The point is moot.

      • SilverNight

I still wonder if Bayonetta would have sold better it had more marketing though. It’s a great game. Are people still port begging for it?

      • Matthew Wesley

        That is a subjective argument.

        • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Of course its subjective. But sales wise/reviews it isn’t. Splatoon and Bayonetta 2 have reviewed and sold better than The Wonderful 101 and Code Name Steam.

          • Matthew Wesley

Yes, that is true… but even the reviews are subjective. So, I reiterate, the stance of Bayonetta 2 being better than W101 is subjective. The sales argument is bs as well because we know plenty of crappy games that have outsold both W101 and Bayonetta 2 combined.

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

I never disagreed that my stance is subjective in the first place, I simply stated my opinion, backed up with facts pertaining to what we are talking about. Bayonetta 2 and Splatoon both reviewed better and sold better than Steam and The Wonderful 101.
Nintendo’s own fans rate Bayonetta 2 and Splatoon better than the Wonderful 101 and Steam. So everything is subjective. But when comparing the games in question, Nintendo fans have spoken with their wallets and mouths.
When comparing Wii U games. There aren’t many Wii U games that have sold better than Bayonetta 2 believe it or not. I think its the 14-15th best selling game on the system. So I don’t know of any “crappy” games on Wii U that have sold better than Bayonetta 2 and the Wonderful 101 combined.

          • Matthew Wesley

Maybe I wasn’t specific enough. Bayonetta 2 is a technically proficient game, and it is fun for what it is- I personally like W101 more. It is more fulfilling to me than Bayonetta 2… but of all of Platinum/Clover/PN03’s studios games, MY favorite is Okami. In terms of comparison of sales numbers and accolades- let’s not forget the game of the year debacle (of course, to be fair- DAI is a multiplat), where DAI was lauded over Bayonetta 2, it isn’t as good as Bayonetta 2 but it damn sure has sold more than it. Do you understand the subjective nature of the argument now?

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

I understand your position. And you can like The Wonderful 101 more than Bayonetta 2. I have no problem with that. But I was talking about Wii U games, relative to Nintendo fans, not multiplat. As far as what Nintendo fans want, The Wonderful 101 was rejected by the market. Many Nintendo fans didn’t like the game’s controls because of the demo. The W101 is a fine game, but most Nintendo fans agree Bayonetta 2 and Splatoon are better.
Like I said, I’m putting this in a “Nintendo only” discussion.

Awesome! Splatoon has now established itself as a commercially sucessful new IP for Nintendo. Nintendo will undoubtedly now expand it into a staple franchise in the future. My hats of Nintendo EAD for this success! Looking forward to getting this charming game soon.

  • abINC4l

NO! This game was supposed to flop! That would’ve given me great joy!
    - Idiot hater

    • Titangamecube

It has no voice chat, surely it’s doom to fail
      -another idiot hater

      • Matthew Wesley

No no no, what they’ll say is: “The game would’ve sold more if it had had voice chat!”

        • Titangamecube

And they will have Mountain Dew and Doritos and shout illoomanati and yolo swag 420.

The accuracy in these posts physically pains me.

Excellent. Splatoon has really become a great selling new IP for Nintendo; great to see those that enjoy the game happy. ^_^

  • CilverKid520_Youtube_Twitch

So happy to hear that. Another successful IP for Nintendo.
