Can we please take a breather from all this talk about NX? It’s getting out of hand really, and I wish I didn’t have to see this kind of talk everyday considering we hardly know anything about it.

    • Mythosa

You could have just skipped the topic. Just sayin.

      • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Apparently that is not an option.

  • dacomentr

Francis, Sony and Microsoft are barely making net profits on 3rd party royalties because they’re spending money on exclusive content, timed exclusivity, development, bundles and marketing. So the lack of 3rd party while profiting on hardware and software is going in Nintendo’s favor.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Actually, Sony spends to much money on TV ads and VR. Nintendo is not profiting enough on Wii U hardware and software sales. They can’t produce enough content to make the money they need to make. 3DS and amiibo are making Nintendo most of their money right now.

      • Matthew Wesley

We don’t know how much or how little Nintendo is profiting on the Wii U, because they only recently started dropping their big games last year- the same FY that they turned a profit on (those previous 3 FY’s where they were in the red, they were growing the business [you know, hiring people, building studios, acquiring new studios, buying shares in DeNA- resource intensive stuff]). At this point, they’ve stopped growing; their new, amalgamated studio is online, and their acquisitions are over (for now- that we know of). Let’s hold off on saying whether or not it isn’t making them money or not when we see FY next year when they have less overhead.

        • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

I was just going off of what Nintendo’s reports say. They’ve detailed the 3DS business and amiibo line are their main money makers, while software like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros has helped as well.
But I agree, we’ll have to see the next report.

          • Matthew Wesley

Yeah, I agree. The numbers tell a story… but not the whole story. The first year and a half of the Wii U’s lifecycle, Nintendo was spending buku cash on growing- that would appear negatively on FY earnings but delaying current profit for future growth is smart business 101 (especially when you’ve got 10 billion just lying around like Nintendo does). Seeing that their heavy hitters didn’t land till last year, I’d say that we will have to wait till we see their FY numbers without the additional expenditures before we can determine how little they’re making on the Wii U. I will say this however, in light of them having a game that was made on a shoestring budget make a million in 3 weeks on an install base of 10 million (give or take a few thousand) is weakening the argument that they aren’t making money on the software on the system. Right now, all they need to do is start pumping out quality well designed titles that have reasonable budgets and they can make bank.

          • Matthew Wesley

Well, as a bit of evidence to support my position- they made 64,320,000 off of Splatoon in 3 weeks in all regions. That game is a budget title for Nintendo, and advertisement budgeting was already factored in pre-launch so… that’s a lot of cheddar; and we know it’s only going to continue to sell as time goes by.

Just the same as people overreacted about E3, people are overreacting about this video.

    It’s not clickbait.

  • CapableTie

They will need to come out swinging with some big exclusives, Sony and MS seem to have a lot of stuff coming out next year so waiting to 2017 could be necessary for them.

  • stoneman

i think its about time i take my leave of playeressence. francis you seem hell bent on posting clickbait articles these days, and dont act like people havent destroyed your arguments. for one example gaughgeyhad clearly and resoundingly destroyed these very points you have brought up.

so yeah whatever enjoy your toxic community you have created, later.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

I don’t seem hellbent on posting clickbait articles these days. Go count all the articles I posted for the past two days and separate what you think is clickbait from regular news stories. I

Gaughgey did not resoundingly destroy “these very points” I brought up. He gave his opinion that was not fact at all. I countered all of his points as well. He was also the guy who said I ban people for disagreeing with me all the time. Which is false. He also said that my opinion is “clickbait” which is the dumbest thing I have every heard.

He refused to talk to live on air and recorded about his accusations and resulted in calling me names like a idiot and lazy fuck.

That dude didn’t destroy anything. He even insinuated that information that I got from Wii U developers like Shin’en, Armature Studios and Renegade Kid was “bullshit” yet he has never developed one Wii U game in his life.

If people will leave the community for giving my honest opinion then they weren’t real fans to begin with. I have no problem with people like that leaving.

  • Matthew Wesley

Well, we’re back on this again… this is getting old… so damn old.

    • sam

Its sad that this site is heading towards a downward spiral in the past couple of months its getting ridiculous. I know later on this comment section these so called “tech experts” and trolls will infest here, and I will leave with this piece:http://i.imgur.com/4Hwn97t.jpg

      • Matthew Wesley

The problem with this topic is threefold:
First, Nintendo isn’t pulling a sega with the Wii U- the system is profitable, they’re making bank on the Wii U in regards to software sales- why would they piss off Wii U owners and drop support in order to push this new “console” (I hesitate to call it that), because Iwata himself said he wanted the NX to be something “beyond a handheld or a console.” He mentioned that he wants to redefine what a dedicated gaming device is with the NX- nowhere did he say it was a console (the CEO and President is whom I take my queues from).
Second, At this point in time, the Wii U is barely 2 and a half years old (it launched in fall 2012), which means it is more akin to being launched in 2013 proper, the console has barely been on the market- it still has at least another 2 and a half years if historical precedence is to be believed. Third, I continue to hear people say Nintendo needs a new “console” to entice 3rd parties- this is simply wishful thinking. Nintendo could’ve made the Wii U identical to the xbox and Ps4 and it still wouldn’t have gotten good 3rd party support. Their next console could be a beast and 3rd parties won’t support it. The argument is moot and has already been disproved. Another argument that has surfaced is the cross generational application- i.e. if the wii u launched with Skyward Sword or Pikmin 3, those games could’ve launched on the Wii as well… why? So we could see the same shit on Nintendo console as last generation games on current generation hardware? The supposition is asinine and without merit. People tend to buy gaming hardware for new experiences not the same thing with shinier graphics (or at least, they should). Ultimately, this video and it’s contents are a bunch of supposition built on carefully dropped bits of (dis)information. I would say that anyone talking about this subject should use conditional phrases like “may” , “could” and “perhaps”.

    • Titangamecube

It’s getting older than the the expired milk in the fridge.

    • dacomentr

      Its mummified.

  • getagrip

its obvious nintendo have trolled you

nintendo n is 2016 nintendo x is 2017 and nintendo a to the mother fucking z is 2018

    • awang0718

lolololol if that happened. Internet would break.

  • awang0718

100% agree with the video. Nintendo cannot continue on much longer with the Wii U. Something went wrong, and NX needs to rectify that.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

2017 could happen as well. But how much will Nintendo invest in the Wii U in 2016 and 2017 leading up to the NX launch.

      • awang0718

It’s not about investing in Wii U. It’s about investing in NX. A 2016 reveal AND release sounds rushed. Really rushed.

        • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Yeah, it would be rushed, but they rushed the Wii U’s launch as well. Xbox One and PS4 were announced and launched in the same year if I’m not correct.

          • awang0718

They were indeed. However, we are talking about Nintendo. No Nintendo console has ever been announced and released during the same year. NX will likely be shown off briefly and detailed next year, much like how Wii u was shown off at E3 2011 (and Wii at E3 2005).

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

I don’t see them doing the same thing for two reasons. The Wii U’s position and current flow of games. Nintendo has never believed in mobile, but now they are making mobile games. Nintendo is changing things up, so relying on what they’ve done in the past is not a definitive answer to what they’ll do in the future. 3 years of teasing stretches your resources thin. Do you really think Nintendo is going to have Wii U games for 2015, all of 2016, then leading to the launch of 2017 for the NX? What is the NX going to launch with?
HOWEVER, you could be 100% right. Your points are very, very valid.

          • awang0718

Nintendo likes to tease people. Remember when the Gamecube was struggling?? Nintendo started teasing about the Nintendo “Revolution” since E3 2004. Then at E3 2005, Iwata pulled the “Revolution” prototype out of his coat pocket, gave a few bits of information (backwards compatible, Virtual Console, internal storage space), and walked away. To me, that’s probably what Nintendo will do next year, albeit without the coat packet.
I don’t know, though. you could be 100% right. Wii U never struggled as badly as the Gamecube. But since it isn’t some complete utter reputation ruining failure (i.e. Virtual Boy) and is profitable, Nintendo at least has some reason to keep it going for another 2 - 2.5 years.

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Good luck to Nintendo if the system doesn’t launch in 2016. GameCube at least had Resident Evil 4 and other 3rd party games in 2004 and 2005. Wii U only has Disney Infinity and Skylanders for 3rd party, and that just Dance crap

          • awang0718

Again, I don’t know. I am only comparing the Wii U/NX situation to the Gamecube/Wii situation because those are the two least successful (non-Virtual Boy) Nintendo systems. Gamecube had more (high profile) third party support than Wii U, but it didn’t do anything to help. Nintendo knew this, and allowed Gamecube to essentially rot while they prepared the Wii.

          • Mythosa

Well, considering the GameCube is out pacing the Wii U in sales, I think the third party support did do something to help, but that’s entirely conjecture one way or the other.

          • awang0718

Third parties did very little. Obviously, the Gamecube outpaced the Wii U, but that difference in sales pace was marginal.

          • Mythosa

I’m not sure how marginal it is really. The way the Wii U is going I don’t see it hitting 15 million. It likely has just hit 10 million yet unless the splatoon bundle really sold well, just over 2 years, 7 months on the market. The GC at just over 2.5 years on the market had sold over 15 million by June 2004. That’s 50% more sales over the Wii U with only 2 months more on the market. I’m not sure how marginal that is.
The GC had multiple third party million sellers. Since both of those things are historical facts, it’s not that presumptuous to say that third parties likely helped the GC sell consoles.

            The GC sales by date
            http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube

The games can be found all over the place, but here is one of them
            http://www.listal.com/list/bestselling-gamecube-games

          • awang0718

Wii U will likely sell about 4-6 million units less than the Gamecube when things are all said and done. Considering that the Gamecube received two $50 price cuts that would essentially halved its original launch price, I am not surprised. Nintendo probably views the Gamecube and Wii U as the same in terms of profit and outlook, which is why I am comparing the two platforms.

None of this really matters. What really matters is if and how Nintendo learns from their mistakes. NX needs to be a success, or their position in the home console market may disappear entirely. It NEEDS third party support, it NEEDS competitive hardware to ensure that third party support can easily develop games on the console, and it NEEDS a competitive online and digital gaming experience to provide users with the best possible experience, not only so they can remain loyal consumers, but also to ensure the transition to NX2 will be a smooth as possible.

Or of course, Nintendo could pray for another Wii. In that case, they better start praying religiously, because catching lightning in a bottle twice doesn’t happen…ever…

  • 7thlevel JR

I agree with Francis a 100% nice video bro

  • PRIMUS

Player Essence has finally turned a great corner. It is a very healthy ground when people can put checks and balances. Like the Government has Democrats and Republicans and a few independents to provide resistance and thoughtful debate. We the independents on the PE forum are more numerous than the Republican and Democratic gamers combined. Thus we shall support truths, emulate greatness, but we shall not be boot lickers to anyone. Even our beloved Nintendo. Great that you put out your opinion Francis, it allows your viewers to share their mindset as well.

  • SilverNight

I think Nintendo has already shifted some of its games to the NX console. Retro’s game not being at E3 this year makes me think it will be a NX launch title. Monolith soft is already working on a new game. It will definitely be for NX. Next Level Games will probably shift its game to NX as well. I think if the NX launches next year even if Nintendo focused development completely from Wii U to NX they are bound to repeat a fatal mistake the Wii u suffered from. Drought. To develop that many games with yet another big increase in power has already put big delays on games for PS4 and Xbone. Nintendo can’t afford to not have its big series games coming out steadily this time. They sure can’t trust third parties porting their games from PS4 and Xbone to fill in the gaps. It will be Wii U all over again. Zelda will probably be the last big franchise to hit Wii U though and it might be on NX. I think it will be more of a retooling then a straight port if it happens. If they keep the IBM chip in the NX to insure backward compatibility they could just have it run on that and have the graphics cores run the game at a higher resolution with better textures and lighting. While third parties may be reluctant to put games on the NX if it comes out in 2017 at least that date will give them time to get used to the dev kits. We have heard nothing of NX dev kits going out to any studios yet and if they announce the system at E3 next year and release by christmas that wont be alot of time for 3rd parties to get time with the dev kit and some sloppier then Wii U ports are bound to happen. Don’t forget Nintendo has “Nindies” for 3rd parties as well.

    • sam
    • Travis Touchdown

“I think Nintendo has already shifted games to the NX.”

No. They simply were unwilling to discuss new Wii U games at E3, considering how absolutely loaded the rest of the year is. We’ll hear more about the next batch of Wii U exclusives once those games start coming out.

Remember, once new Wii U games get announced, this entire narrative will tumble like a house of cards.

      • SilverNight

I agree that they are unwilling to discuss new games. More games will get announced for the Wii U. The console is far from dead. I just said some games might be making the shift to the NX, definitely not all games. The next main Mario game for instance NIntendo themselves said would be for the next system. I am in the boat that it will be a 2017 to 2018 release and that they have a few games already planned for its launch. Games take years to make and 3 years development is reasonable, so they would be starting those games now. I hope we get a new direct soon that puts some people’s fears to rest that the Wii U is being abandoned. It’s not! 2016 will be full of great Wii U games and Zelda will be the biggest of them all. I am not expecting a big “announcement” of NX next year. They will just talk about some features of the system and that will be it. People expecting a full reveal might be setting their hopes too high.

Man this is a tough one, as a WiiU owner I really hope it doesn’t because I want the Wiiu to be their main focus for as long as possible, but I can totally see it happening.

I guess it’s cool that Francis is at least excited for the next Nintendo system lol.

GUYS! GALS! I’ll be making a part 2 where I give all sorts of reasons the NX won’t launch in 2016! Be patient and open minded.

      You underestimated the internet.

  • Liquid-Sunrise

Well, I do forward to watching part 2.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Part 2 will have all sorts of reasons why the NX CANT launch in 2016!

  • Travis Touchdown

Like a lot of the Post E3 ‘coverage’ this entire video is made up of misconceptions and half truths. Of course Nintendo is hard at work making their next console… they confirmed they were as early as 2014, I believe. That doesn’t mean that Nintendo is making this mythical ‘Super Powerful’ new console that third parties will be begging to port their games onto. The entire idea is ridiculous.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

And where did I say Nintendo is making a “mythical super powerful” console that third parties will be begging to port their games to?

      That’s right….. I didn’t.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

And where did I say Nintendo is making a “mythical super powerful” console that third parties will be begging to port their games to?

Another pointless NX clickbait artical that will lead people to overhype themselves to a massive letdown :/ ughh… can I just say who gives a rat shit?

      • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

Clickbait? Nothing clickbat about the article. Now if it was titled: Wii U doomed so Nintendo MUST Bring out the NX in 2016 or they will DIE”

Yeah, that’s clickbait. Giving my opinion with a modest title and even doing a second part we’re I’ll talk about it launching in 2017 is not clickbait.

        • SoccerStar9001

          Slightly clickbait.
          Maybe 38.78% clickbait title.

          • D.M.T

You’re trying too hard to be nice. Just say it’s clickbait, 100% clickbait.

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

So my opinion on when a system will launch is clickbait? That is crazy.

          • SoccerStar9001

            Not your opinion, your topic.
            See comments.

You tried not to be a 100% clickbait video, but any video about the NX get a 16.88% automatically. Plus a 11.90% when it tries to make theory about it.

At least you didn’t flame anyone, but it is 38.78% clickbait video.

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

So if I made one video that only stated “Satoru Iwata announced the Nintendo NX at an investor meeting with DeNA”, its auto 16.88% clickbait? LOL, you’re obviously joking now. lol

          • SoccerStar9001

If it is something official, you can deduct 9.99% off.
            xD
Don’t ban me, just a troll here.

        • D.M.T

It IS clickbait because you shouldn’t even be talking about an unannounced gaming system that much. It doesn’t make sense at all to talk about the NX because we’re still in the Wii U era. Yes the Wii U is struggling but there’s still time for Nintendo to turn things around. You won’t see no one talk about the PS5 or the next Xbox so how does it make sense to talk about the NX so much this early in Wii U’s life?

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

            1. I can discuss what I want.
            2. The NX is not unannounced, Nintendo announced it at the investor meeting, and brought it up by Reggie Fils-Aime and Kensuke Tanabe
            3. People aren’t talking about the PS5 and Next Xbox because Sony/MS has not mentioned anything about their next systems. When they do, best believe I’ll be talking about them.

          • D.M.T

            1. That makes you no different from other gaming sites jumping on the NX bandwagon. Congrats.
            2. The NX has not been officially announced yet. Nintendo talked about NX at the investor meeting because idiots in the gaming community thought that Nintendo was going 3rd party.
            3. So instead of focusing on PS4 and Xbox One you would be talking about systems that won’t be released anytime soon. Yeah that makes a lot of sense (sarcasm).

          • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

            1. I’m not jumping on a NX bandwagon, I’m talking about a system Nintendo announced themselves. Am I not allowed to talk about it?
            2. Nintendo has not shown off the console, but it has been announced. I’m aware why Iwata announced the console at the DeNA meeting.
            3. Who said anything about “focusing” or not. I focus most of my videos on Wii U, NOT NX. But if Sony and MS announced their next systems, I would talk about them a little bit, in addition to talking about their current systems, just like I do now with Wii U vs. NX.
I’ve made FAR more videos on Wii U than NX, so my “Focus” has always been on whats out now. You’re just getting all up in arms for some reason.

          • Mythosa
      • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeqVK6IRhSAzMTVrInpg03Q Otaku DJK1NG

It not clickbait but it’s more of a pointless discussion on something that will be addressed next year.

But hey let the folk talk about it all year long.

  • Guidosaur

Nice points Francis. RIP to this comment section tho lol I bet you’ll have some angry people arguing with you tomorrow.

    • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

I think I was pretty reasonable, and I’m even going to do a part on why its 2017.

    • Travis Touchdown

I doubt that very much. Everything he brought up in the video has been absolutely demolished by this very comments section in the past few days, myself included. There’s really nothing more to discuss: Francis is wrong, that’s that.

I will say that I’m unsubscribing from the channel, though. This is not the kind of content I want to see. It’s far too inaccurate to take seriously.

      • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

You, nor anyone else has demolished anything I’ve said. lol. I’m not wrong, because we don’t know yet.

You haven’t brought up one counterpoint to the video.

      • http://playeressence.com/ PlayerEssence

You, nor anyone else has demolished anything I’ve said. lol. I’m not wrong, because we don’t know yet.

You haven’t brought up one counterpoint to the video.

      • Guidosaur

Alright I was correct I see. Why are you so up in arms and upset over an OPINION piece lol?

        • D.M.T

Because it doesn’t make sense to talk about an unannounced gaming system. The focus should be on Wii U and not on the NX.

          • Guidosaur

I mean, why can’t he do the opinion pieces he wants lol? Just because it doesn’t make sense to you why he’d want to, doesn’t mean it doesn’t make sense for everyone. The dude makes a ton of videos on Wii U lol. Nothing wrong with speculating on the future.

          • D.M.T

He’s been talking and posting too much articles about the NX. It’s tiring and stupid. Let the focus be on Wii U and let’s talk about NX once it’s officially announced by Nintendo

          • Guidosaur

He posts more NX stuff but hasn’t stopped posting Wii U news so why get so angry about it? What’s wrong with thinking of the future lol daddy Nintendo isn’t gonna send us to time-out for speculating.

          • 7thlevel JR

did you watch the e3 direct aka the wii funeral then you will realize nintendo gave up on the wii u

        • Mythosa

Yeah, I’m not understanding all the hate on this topic lol. If it gets released in 2016, then it does, if it gets released in 2017, then it gets released then. It’s just a topic for conversation.
Are people worried about Nintendo or something? They really shouldn’t be. If they are worried about their investment, I can understand that but, to me, there are already a whole bunch of great games on the console and more that are still coming so there isn’t anything to get worked up about. I don’t get the hostility here. I have been jumped on a few times for bringing up similar ideas, whether right or wrong. Who knows, and till that time comes, who cares.
As I have said before, if it comes earlier than later, the console owes me nothing. I have over 40 full release games (not counting indie games) and the majority are really good. That’s actually more than any other console I have ever owned during a life cycle.

Perhaps it’s just that I’m happy with my purchase and others possibly aren’t? I don’t know lol.

Do not unsubscribe, Checks and balances are needed on player essence. Some modern day gamers need us veterans to teach them that we are not sheep and blind followers like the majority of xbox users. Or even the vast pomposity of some sony game players. We were there when we shut down Sega and their Genesis; back in the great days when Nintendo had the marvelous games diversity of the SNES. Stay, you are not alone, we are many, and we shall stand by Nintendo, but guide them to greatness when the stray.

Dude, this isn’t a “checks and balances”/ “keepin ’em honest” issue. This is speculation… about a product… that we have no information about… aside from it existing and Nintendo talking more about it next year. while we’re speculating about the “NX”, let’s talk about Dark Matter, alternate universes, and string theory. The fact of the matter is this- until we have CONCRETE information (i.e. Iwata walks out on stage and tells us what it is), everything else is at most an educated guess- or a hypothesis. A hypothesis supported with hard evidence is a theory (there is no hard evidence, therefore it isn’t even a theory). A proven theory is affirmed by observation of the event in multiple cases or it is replicated in controlled cases multiple times. Because this is an event, the only way we will know with 100 percent certainty what the “NX” is is by watching Nintendo’s E3 next year. Any other guesses or suppositions are exactly that: guesses and suppositions.

I was just keeping a reader of Player essence with us :).We need different mindsets here. lol.

          • Matthew Wesley

Different mindsets are welcome. Baseless or weak suppositions not, as is people making statements about factual events without researching the history of what they are talking about.

History is rewritten every day. Before Obama the US had never had a black president. Before Kim Campbell Canada had never had a female Prime Minister. Before this year there was the Cuban and US embargo.
There is a lot to learn from History, but that doesn’t mean everything will be the same, or different. The idea is to learn from it and make the best decision dependant upon the situation.

          • Matthew Wesley

History isn’t rewritten… it just is. As we learn new things from our past, how we view history changes. As far as why we study history- you’re right, but the reason we study history is because it tends to repeat itself.

All I know, is that by the time Nintendo revels the NX, they will go beast mode.
